OOW has some nice stuff. I have a friend who has a BAR that his grandfather kept. It was never registered and WAS still full auto recently. OOW rebuilt it using as much of the original parts as possible making it semi-auto. It's a shame it was never registered. Being caught with an unregistered full-auto is a hefty fine and a few years in prison. Not worth it... Even though it's not as valuable as it once was, it's still fun to shoot.

LRB or Smith Enterprise M14 clones. I love my M1A but the receiver is cast not forged. The two manufacturers mentioned will provide a weapon as close to milspec as is possible.

I've looked at LRB's M25. I'll have to check out enterprise.
The history of these things plays a big part of why I love them so much. There's just something about the way that the military rifles feel with their many years of dings and marks compared to an off-the-shelf civilian rifle that makes them different. I'm pissed if I scratch up one of my new guns. I wish I knew the story of the scratches in my old ones... |

7.62 x 51 / .308 has some options
L1A1 ( has an adjustable gas block ) My friend Kurt has a LaRue Tactical OBR which shoots extremely well https://www.thevettebarn.com/forums/o...300-yards.html If you want to go bolt action, Savage is probably the best bang for the buck Some folks get all bent on the barrel nut but that is what allows them to make such a good shooting factory assembled rifle for the money. Plus right now is the middle of tax season. Some folks may be selling their weapons to pay the tax bill. Good deals can be had at gun shops and pawn shops. |

Don't get one of these:
"Over time, the Chauchat machine rifle's just passable performance in its dominant version (the Mle 1915 in 8mm Lebel) and the failure of its limited version in U.S. 30-06 (the Mle 1918), have led some modern experts to assess it as the "worst machine gun" ever fielded in the history of warfare.[2][3][4]" Chauchat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |

I got a 2005 vintage socom16. It has a GI trigger from surplus, but the rest is springfield armory new. This is my black California gun. Not enough 'evil features' to be considered an assault weapon so it is still legal to pop in the (previously legally obtained) 20 round magazines.
If i had known better i would have bought one with a longer barrel and I may try to pick up a barrel and gas system someday to make it standard length. a couple of things i learned about these Springfield modern M14/M1A variants: 1) don't get the loaded match version if you are going to use it in the field or during a riot etc. The tighter chamber will have issues with garbage surplus ammo like the SA stuff you used to be able to get cheap. The regular model with fire any 308/7.62x51 cartridge all day long. 2) the black fiberglass stock is thinner and I like it better than the wood one. |
