Default Poutine, eh?



Poutine, the legendary Canadian/Québécois side dish composed of french fries, squeaky cheese curds, and brown gravy, is trending Stateside.

Careful investigation of poutine availability in the U.S. led Scott Hume at Burger Business to report this week that “more and more American burger bars and other restaurants are catching on.”

“Poutine is tasty, fun, and messy and some of the best young American chefs are having a ball with it,” he says.

It may take a major chain to get poutine rolling off (or on) the tongues of Americans, but Wendy’s is well-positioned to make that happen. When the chain recently started offering the dish in Canada, it started a “Poutition” to make poutine the Country’s national dish.

[It looks nasty to me, but I haven't tasted it. While adding catsup to the fries might be overkill, I wonder what tomato gravy would taste like? Comments on poutine?]

I've eaten a huge plate of it - it was brown gravy, not tomato gravy - in Fergus Ontario. It's good stuff.

But I also like dipping fries in mayonnaise, so YMMV.

The stuff is great. Especially if you can get it with some Montreal smoked meat.
I always put ketchup on fries and gravy and do the same with poutine.

What Wendy's serves is garbage.

BTW: You can eat this once a month or you will die of a massive coronary otherwise.

I like malt vinegar on my fries. Accidental discovery when eating fish and chips. Sort of like discovering that the maple syrup on your pancakes is also good on bacon.

Throughout most of the 80s and 90s I ate that weekly in diners in Joisey. Go most anywhere and ask for "cheese fries and gravy" and that's what you get. I ordered it last Fall after a track rental. Goop loops sheit.
