I read somewhere how Anse Hatfield got the nickname "Devil".

One version is that he was such a good shot and horseman, he wasn't scared of the Devil himself.
The other story stated that there was a preacher named Hatfield ( No relation) nearby, and he took the nickname "Devil" so people could differentiate between the two of them.

Man, everyone up here in WV is buzzin about this!! Pretty sad if ya ask me, the only real thing the state has to be proud of is Jescoe White and the hatfields/McCoys!!

I just found out Nick Saban is from WV too, all kinds of trailer trash history goin on with this place!!

Good show. I always wondered what was behind all the anger these two families had for each other. By watching this show, it appears the fact that they were always drinking whiskey could have contributed to it.

I watched all 3 parts, that is the more tv than I have watched in 5 years. I really enjoyed it though. Took me almost two episodes to figure out who Tom Berenger was playing.

I didn't even know he was in it til I was watching the credits last night. Still not really sure who he was, was he "Uncle Jim" that got killed in the woods with his dog towards the end?
