Rest in Peace, Maytag, thy humble servant...
I posted last week about my Maytag washing causing grease spots on clothes. Well, Friday I had to replace her: She was only 38-years-old. I bought her in 1979 and had a $25 discount that was given to flood victims when the Pearl River overflowed then. The coupon was given to me by an actual flood victim who didn't need a new washer. In those 38 ensuing years, I didn't have a single service call to repair her. The matching dryer is still going strong. I remember reading a Consumer Reports article before I bought them: They had run both for 24 hours every day to extrapolate how long they'd last. They concluded 62 years. The washer and dryer were about $200 each, less the two $25 coupons I had. She had a bad transmission, and I found only one new one in the U.S.: Price was $450 plus a lot of shipping cost. Add about the same for labor, and it made no economic sense to repair her. She might have lasted another 38 years with repairs, but who knows, and parts are scarce. My new washer is a brand you may have never heard of: Speed Queen. It's the brand used in Laundromats; they have a 3-year warranty while almost all other washers have one a 1-year warranty. No point is buying a new Maytag since they were bought by Whirlpool, and are now just another POS like all other appliances. Anyway, RIP old friend. I hate to see you go. |

The washer in that pic wasn't mine, just a random pic off the interweb.

There was a speed queen in the city where I used to be a Police Officer.
You could always count on fast, dependable service, whenever you wanted it. I arrested her several times. |

Our old Maytag washer was 35 when she finally passed 4 years ago. New motor, belts, hoses, pump and transmission all
prolonged her life. The matching Maytag dryer is still going strong at 39! Our new Speed Queen washer with the stainless steel tub is fantastic! |

Come think of it, my first ex and I back in the early 70's had a washer/dryer duo in the townhouse....and of course the dryer motor went about 6 months before the separation.......I still have that motor tied to the workbench, with a wire wheel and grinder stone on either end.....no guards, just open wheels.....
43 years now..... |

They really don't build them to last anymore. It's the same with cars.
Although I have to say, I've had my Samsung pair for 10 years now, and aside from a few very minor issues, they've performed well. I remember when I was a kid, all the Laundromats had Speed Queen machines. |

My wife had a Maytag when we moved in together. At the time it was about 25 years old and working like a champ. It finally died, transmission went out on it. We bought another Maytag, before Whirlpool bought them and discovered a POS. It was a Neptune. Broke three times in warranty, flooded the laundry room twice and always broke with a full wash load in it.
We trashed a 1 year old washing machine and bought a used old style Maytag. Had it for another 10 years and the transmission went out on it as well. Settled on a Whirlpool from Lowes, which has been okay so far. |

Everyone badmouths Whirlpool, but I've done OK with mine. Both are 17 years old, replaced the belt on the dryer and McGyver'd the lid switch sensor on the washer, and that's it. Of course, most of that time I've been single, so they haven't been used as much as, say, a family of 6 would have used them.
