That is absolutely correct. I didn't mean for my answer to imply otherwise if it did.

I actually looked at a Garand this weekend and came so so close to buying it. I ended up buying an m1903 instead.

Was it a Star Model?

And let us not forget the lowly stripper clips that fed the magazines when they were hungry.

It has a 7/1942 Springfield (non star) barrel and went straight from service to a private collection.

It is in absolutely phenomenal condition with original leather sling and cleaning kit still intact.

When you get something like that, you wonder if it was carried by some Marine in the Pacific and what battles it was involved in. Semper Fi, Pete

NICE!!! Who is the manufacturer? Springfield or Rock Island (RIA), on the receiver ring? I started off in Highpower Competition with one of those-still have it...

That is why I couldn't pass it up. It is a 1906 manufacture date with a 1942 re-barrel so I would guess about a 99% chance that it saw combat in BOTH World Wars.

I would give anything to know it's history.

I also have a line on a S&W .38 Navy pilot's revolver (with the U.S. Navy stamps) from the same guy's collection that I keep trying to resist buying.

Now that I am thinking about it... he has about a dozen that I want including a 1912 manufacture "U.S. Army" stamped m1911, a 1927 "U.S. Army" 1911a1 and a few Garands.

It is a Springfield. It is a 264,XXX serial which puts it square in the range of the receivers with possible hardening issues but after doing a LOT of research I'm not too worried about firing it as long as I use slow burn 150gr. rounds and not try to hot load it with something modern. The serial also puts it as one of the first few thousand designed for the .30-06 from the original .30-03. and one of the first modified for the m1905 bayonet.

You've done your homework! That "under 800,000" serial # was my next question. I found a copy of General Julian Hatcher's Notebook before I bought my 1903 and learned all about that issue. I agree with your 150 gr, slow powder idea. You should be OK with that. Mine is a Rock Island Arsenal (1917) #241XXX but they had a nickel-iron receiver without the hardening issues the early Springfields had. Looks like you have a fine piece and a great investment as well!

I've done a lot of looking on the early serial issue and was a little skeptical about shooting it but I have come to a few conclusions.

-There were a total of 33 failed Springfield recievers manufactured between 1903-1917 (5 in 1906)

-I have looked a LOT and the only recently reported failure I could find was actually a 1,XXX,XXX serial Springfield

-Of the ones actually reported to fail in the field, most failed relatively early in their life, and all of the reported failures occured with the harder, more brittle early manufacture (pre 1927) brass.

-Faulty ammo could have easily been the cause of some (if not most) of the actual issues (from Hatcher's research)

-Most of the failed recievers were made in the 1903-1905 era and had seen much higher pressures at some point in their life firing the .30-03 round which was a 220gr. and MUCH hotter than the .30-06 from 1906 on.

-The failure rate of the RIA was almost double the Springfield.

-1st Marines used many low serial Springfields (about 7,000 of them) throughout the duration of WWII without a single reported reciever failure... which goes to the theory of if they were going to fail they did it early. There is no doubt that those 7,000 saw some serious use.

Here are some quotes from various researchers that I found to be enlightening on the subject:

Quote:
Between 1917 and 1929 three soldiers lost an eye to receiver failure, and six more had unspecified injuries consider serious. An additional 34 soldiers received minor injuries from receiver failures.
Quote:
Four of the reported Springfield receiver failures were due to accidentally firing an 8 mm Mauser round in the Springfield rifle. (Hatcher)
That one gets a

I know that's a lot to read but I am bored and I find this stuff to be incredibly interesting.

It is a .30-06 rifle... and it gets mounted on the roof with a remote trigger on the steering wheel.

You can also use it by installing the idiot hanging out the window mod.

If I started listing all of the things I have repaired (especially if you start counting at race tracks) with duct tape over the years I would be writing all day.

Do not forget the dropping license plate mod, which only requires an M-1 Garand, a little support, Duct Tape, and a string attached to the trigger and the gear shift, with a little play of course. Good for all tailgaters.

Did you originally call it 100 MPH tape?

You say "arming himself up" as if I'm not already...

These are just the latest additions.
