Tires are always the weakest link.

More tires = more capacity.

Dually's actually offer less towing capacity, since the heavier axle consumes a greater portion of the GVWR.

Correct.

It spreads the load out across 4 tires rather than just 2. Less friction, less heat.

Why the obsession with dicks?

Used to do about 30,000 miles a season with a Chevy crew cab dually and a 36' tag along. Occasionally we had to borrow a truck if we were fixing the dually and the difference between a dually and a single is considerable.

Keeping in mind that both my Suburban and truck have basically the same exact frame, brakes, etc... difference being the engine/transmission combination.

Towing the same load with both of them there is a night and day difference.
And what would towing with this be?

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious?

Tow with a big dually and get back to me about how "great" your truck is.

This was a stupid nutswinging discussion from the start. I will never understand the "mine is better" mentality that for some reason seems to consume people on the internet.

The difference between a dually and a single in the overall towing experience with a large trailer is almost as big as the difference between gas and diesel. Even more if you are on mostly flat terrain. When you start considering 5th wheel trailers etc, and get into REAL towing, I want a big dually. Period.

Again, right truck for the job. Sometimes a 1/2 ton gas will do it, sometimes a 3/4 gas or diesel is more than enough, sometimes you need to go for the dually, ... sometimes you need the big Kenworth.

Everybody has their own needs with a truck. Trying to throw a blanket statement over who should buy what is stupid.

RV people are worse about this than the causal trailer-towing numbnuts.

38' gas RV loaded down with 8 people plus gear plus water and fuel plus using a Suburban as a toad (which is also loaded to the max).

What a mess.

Fug an A that would be better. But again you failed to acknowledge any of the other things I have said. You pick what you want.

This wasn't a "mine is better" discussion. This was a 1/2 ton gasser vs 3/4 ton diesel discussion.

I have owned both. I own a gasser now too. So why is it a "mine is better" discussion at all? I said diesel is better and really doesn't cost much more overall and some could argue they are cheaper in the long run when all things are considered.

One other question... you don't think that perhaps having the weight of 7 people, 2 large dogs, and all of the crap that 7 people bring along for a trip might account for some of the difference here?

No, I am not saying that the Suburban tows as good as the diesel, but a thousand plus additional pounds makes a noticeable difference on a 3/4 ton truck no matter what engine is in it.

Completely agree.

I never told anyone what to buy. I just said there is no comparison between the two which is true especially in the hills/mountains.

I also base the value discussion on the $6800 price difference I paid for the Duramax/Allison combo.

Completely agree again. I did base my original thought when I towed the boat back from storage and I was by myself.

On flat ground the gasser does a pretty good job but my mileage this weekend sucked. Not that I purchased it for fuel economy but I get about 6-7 miles to the gallon better with the diesel towing.
