Iphone 6s WTF?

Ok, I'm a little confused here. I dropped my long time AT&T unlimited plan a while back because it was a rip off $110 bucks a month and I was getting throttled at 3gb of data anyways. I switched my Iphone 5s to a gophone plan for $40 a month, and it lets me use tethering

So the new Iphone comes out next week, and it's time for me to upgrade....Why the FU<K can I not pay full price and buy a new iphone?

AT&T says I can pay full price, but would have to change to a "sharing" plan, which costs $20 more per month for the exact same service i'm getting now.

Can somebody explain this to me? And what are my options?!

Can I just start a new contract with AT&T and cancel imediately...and just swap my sim card from my 5s to the 6s?

I'm confused about the plan bit.
Buy the phone outright directly from Apple, insert your SIM in it and it should be as functional as your current phone is right now.

Tethering is almost always a $carrier option, is your 5s jailbroken to get it? If it was carrier activated, than it should be part of the SIM data and should also work in the new phone I would think. (I could be mistaken about that part, I'm not sure how carriers activate that feature on the phone)

That's what i'm trying to do, however, I can't order a phone from apple. When it runs my AT&T plan it says my plan doesn't qualify to buy a new phone. (yes even paying out right)

I'm currently on a gophone prepaid plan. No the phone is not jail broken, i'ts just $40 a month for 1.5gb data (throttled after that) and unlimited everything else. And tethering is free

About four years ago, I was told there was a "lockout" plan for "new" customers. If you drop AT&T, you have to wait a specified amount of time to be considered a "new" customer. (And it was a long time)

They do it specifically for that reason (so you can't drop AT&T for a few months, and then qualify for big discounts). :/

I don't know if they still do it or not, but that's what they used to do.

I just went through Apple's preorder process and see what you mean.

What you can do is order the Tmobile version, which is factory unlocked. They don't implicitly state it's unlocked, but it is. In doing that, they ask nothing about a plan, just configure your phone and it goes straight to checkout.

When you get the phone, swap your SIM into it before turning the phone on.

Of course this is at your own risk, but it worked this way for the 5s and 6 when they launched, I have no reason to suspect the 6s will be any different.

I can use my wife to set up a new plan if i have to I guess...the ridiculous thing is this isn't for a discount, just to get the phone at full price.


Interesting Tom, I'll look into it Although limiting international travel scares me a bit...new job may have some of that.

It has worked this way when I upgraded from an iPhone 4S to a 5S to a 6+ as they came out and I am still on my original unlimited plan. The only thing to do is to make sure that you have a good backup of the old phone before you switch and then restore the backup onto your new phone.

Chris you can buy a phone from the apple store at full price. I did this with verizon as well because i did not want to change plans or use my upgrade. I later used my upgrade for my sons phone. you just cannot do it on-line.

I bought my phone and my wife's phone from Apple.

Our carrier is T-Mobile and we each have unlimited talk, text, international calling on her phone, and Internet, and each have 3GB tethering included each month. I pay $85 and that covers both of us.

If you are not under contract any more, att should not care what phone you have. Go to a store and talk to a sales person. The call center people are a pain to deal with.

So I was bored during my studies today at 1pm and looked up apple just to see how far out a 6s would be to reserve...turns out there were plenty available, I reserved a phone for their financing option (as that was the only way I could see to reserve a phone), for 1:30 to 2pm window. By 2:15 I had a new Iphone 6s in my hands...they wouldn't offer me financing due to my prepaid att plan, so my only choice was to purchase outright. it works for me
