Forgive? Or hardline?
Our oldest dog is a 10+ year old Old English Mastiff. At her age, I really don't expect her to be around to see this year's holidays. She's also showing it too. These big dogs tend to have hip problems and she's no exception. Because we care, we've salvaged a couple couch cushions people have thrown away for her to sleep on. Tonight we heard this weird sound coming from the bedroom. I go to investigate and she's shredded one of these cushions! Picking up material and foam stuffing all over the floor.
The Mrs thinks we should find her another cushion. I think she's shit out of luck and she can lay her decrepit old bones on the bare floor. What would the Barn do? |

Go to Ross and buy her a dog bed that she cannot so easily shred.
Perhaps those cushions smelled like something that she was trying to find and kill! |

I'd try to make him as comfortable as possible. I was wondering if the chewing might be a sign the critter is in pain.

Maybe the cushions came from a cat house.....

We have used this style of dog bed "Kuranda" ( Kuranda Dog Beds - Patented Orthopedic and Chewproof Dog Beds ) in our kennel for decades. They work very well for our herd of Great Danes.
Our Danes had literally ate hundreds of 'pillow' style beds and bed covers before we found these "chew proof" dog beds. They are a bit expensive, but they last forever, are easy to clean and the dogs love them. |

Or, perhaps, do you want them to have compassion and tolerance for you in your Autumn years? This VBOTer votes get another bed or something, along with spending more time with the dog. Even if it happens again, I think you should tough it out and keep the dog comfortable. You are family, right? |

Forgive. After all, it's a commandment, not a request.

If you get him another cushion, he will likely shred it, too.
+1 on the indestructible dog bed. |

Several good responses here.
Like mentioned...there's no telling what scent the dog got from a used cushion. Make her as comfortable as possible while you can. Don't just leave her on a bare floor knowing she's old and having issues to begin with...just not the right thing to do man. |

I've had mixed results with those. One of our dogs can manage to go through the material when they get to scratching and stuff. I hadn't seen them with the covers though, which would at least be a disposable component. Might need to make another run at them...
