Default Got my company to hire my favorite Indian software engineer.

Firm loves me in only one month, and they knew my choice was all I wanted. I was able to secure him a 94% raise from old firm we both worked for, plus a 5K USD signing bonus. He's now the highest paid Indian asset at my company, even exceeding the Indian SVP of HR.

You don't skimp on talent. I've got 3+ years of history with this kid, and he's the best. To the guy who hired me, he was going to pay an onshore talent that we both have history with $150k+, and I still wanted my resource, who is only 41% of the resource who didn't join us. Major savings for the company, and the biggest win yet. He and I will build miracles for this company.

Indian culture is different. He gave notice, but is forced to work another 60 days.

Maybe he can spend that time calling folks about the changes in Medicare or helping them with an extended warranty on their car

Gonna have to do a big thumbs down on this one. I've worked with many Indians over the last decade or so and in my opinion they're pretty useless. They get thrown into jobs they can't handle because the company is shortsighted and wants to cut costs. They work through these Indian employment agencies on employment visas and are paid half or less than we get. And in fully 50% of the jobs I've worked with these guys their work is crap. One company I worked at had a bunch of Indian mechanical guys and we found out that all the work they did was wrong. Every time I saw these ****ers they were outside smoking cigarettes. Management said that my group of US contractors would have to re-do all their work, 60 hour weeks mandatory, and no overtime pay. F that!!! That day I turned in my notice and went off to play golf for two years.

And I'm still of the opinion that there are plenty of qualified Americans who are being displaced because these guys work for peanuts. It's nothing more than overseas outsourcing on American soil. And I think that's kinda shitty.

Perhaps this guy is an exception. I've worked with one or two that were pretty sharp too, but the majority of them can stay in Bangalore and live under a truck as far as I'm concerned.

I'm a firm believer that relationships and creativity are the only things that AI and all the current buzz words, robotics, blah blah blah, can't replace.

This kid is amazing and has even worked for free for me to prove some concepts out. It gives me great pleasure to have brokered a life changing deal for him. With his new salary, he'll be living like a king in Bangalore, with his wife and 2 young children as he finishes his new home build. First thing he's going to pay for with his new found wealth is an air conditioner for his home office. Currently fan only.

Again, life changing income for my Indian friend, but he will equally make me more successful with the new firm. We are basically Batman and Robin. Without each other, we can only achieve so much, but together, we will conquer worlds.

Mike, I hear you, and I have the EXACT same opinion that you do. I hated being in the bigs and being forced to work with Indian assets. They are all 1-trick ponies. I've been in the bigs for 8 years, and I've come across 2 rock stars. This kid is one of them, and I used my relationship and reputation to get him on my team. I can't be successful without him.

95% of the offshore resources I've been engaged with are shit.

Also, the onshore resource, who would have been $155k+ was a previous co-worker of mine. He was my employer's first choice, but they couldn't land him. My Indian cohort was my first choice, even over my dear friend who chose not to work for this company, so in the end it all worked out.

Again, I'm 100% in support of your position. I don't give a shit about one's background, I only care about talent, commitment, hard work, and punctuality.

Fair enough. These are all important qualities and if your opinion is that this guy is U2 and not the Starland Vocal Band, more power to you. I just know that India is one of the big reasons US Manufacturing has gone in the toilet. Corporate America's decision to embrace cheap labor has done us FAR more harm than good as a country. And knowing you as I do, I know you understand this too.

Still getting used to trying to talk to them the way they talk. Very pushy, talking over each other, guess it's not considered rude to them. Can't wait for a lull to jump in, it never comes.

in my experience, long ago, working with indians (from India) on engineering tasks, they were very good if the task was clearly explained, repetitive, and little, to no imagination was required. but creativity was not their strong suit.

In my business, I have a standing Rule - if something we need is manufactured in the US, buy it there first.

We have several Indian co-workers on my team and they have excellent work ethic and are extremely valuable team members. Nothing but good experience with them. Great work ethic and they tend to volunteer for extra work. If I had an IT business, I wouldn't hesitate to get Indian team members.

It must get confusing seeing how they're all named "Bob."

Have known a few who did more than just request the needful thing. I perceived that they had a high degree of self-control, a strong work ethic, and were not easily provoked to anger... Wouldn't want to be on their bad side if/when that changes.

Yeah - and bringing somebody on board when you yourself are new means your brand is on their backside and they better not f*ck up...

I had 2-3 people follow me from job to job over the years and they were genius-level programmers, no foreigners but I did have many, many working for me and they all have their idiosyncrasies and cultural differences.
