Harbor (China) Freight Utility Trailer
Heavy Duty Utility Trailer - 870 Lb. Capacity
I'm thinking about one of these and modding it for a Kayak trailer. Also need to haul another bed up to the Mountain, and figured it would be cost effective to buy one of these for a few hundred instead of renting something from Uhaul. The 8 inch tires concern me though. Round trip from house to cabin is around 200 miles. Those tiny wheels would be spinning at like 200 mph at freeway speeds. Any idears? |

I purchased that ALUMINUM Triton 4' x 8' trailer for $300 at the local motorcycle dealer. It was a brand new leftover. 1200 lb capacity. I would highly suggest purchasing a used quality trailer before buying a piece of shit HF trailer. There are times to purchase HF items, this is not one of them. Get a used trailer and check out the frame and axle to make sure it's still solid. Replace the wheel bearings and seals. Replace the tires if there are any cracks. Lights and wiring are cheap ( HF would be fine for those items) Do a local search on ebay and check out CL too. Jeff |

U-Haul sells off older units. Might be worth a look.

I retired my HF trailer after 6 seasons of hauling various 4 wheelers 35 miles on an Interstate each way during the 3 month deer season here plus regular dump runs, loan outs to neighbors and living outside as I have no garage. Total parts needed in that time 1 set of tires and two sets of hub seals. Never even had to replace a bearing all that time.
New trailer came from Tractor Supply... bigger platform and larger wheels but only expanded metal as a floor. Pulls nice though and less than a grand brand new. BTW, add the cost of decking and side rails to the HF kit since they don't come with. |

My neighbor picked up a HF ute trailer last weekend- NO grease in wheel bearings! They looked like right out of the wrapper, slight oil film but NO grease. I'm glad I told him to check.
All the crap I bought from them were always dry at the obvious lube points... |

that HF trailer is sold as a light hauling unit...and I believe there is a max mph mentioned
It's good if used within design parameters. Prob is when Joe Hick tries to use one way beyond its capacity. |

I would check for a local trailer manufacturer in your area. There's some low side motorcycle haulers that are pretty light and compact, yet worth owning compared to the bamboo tool special. I have had a 5x8 utility trailer that i have had for 12 years... granted, a little bigger than what we are talking about, but it has been a popular item to be borrowed and totally worth the $1200 I spent on it back in 2002.

Ive worked on a good number of HF trailers, although I love most everything HF sells, these trailers, you are better off avoiding them. The metal is very thin, the hinge area is weak, the hitch latch is cheap, the tires are crap, and the hubs are crap..
As a yard trailer...yes.. As haauling anything on a roadway, no.. You can get used 4X8's on the cheap on Craigslist, usually about the same cost, needing a bit of work..or even go a bit longer/wider...5X10 even... |

If you buy a Chinese made trailer and you value your cargo, check every weld and nut and bolt on the thing before you load it up and use it. I bought a shop crane from the HB equivalent up here and a lot of the bolts hardly went through to catch the nut on the other side and the angles of the welds, and weld quality, were all different. It took me all day to fight, push, and pull the damn thing together, as well as all new quality nuts and bolts.
No way was I trusting an expensive motor or my car under it, when using it. |

I'm probably just going to pony up and buy an actual Kayak trailer. Most of them have 12 inch tires, and I won't have to monkey with fabricating anything etc.
Also considering this one from Northern Tool, at least it's got 12 inch tires. FREE SHIPPING Ironton Personal Watercraft and Boat Trailer Kit 610lb. Load Capacity | Trailers| Northern Tool + Equipment |

Uhaul trailers are proprietary, they absolutely do not sell them.
