Larry the Cable Guy's Southern accent is fake!

This is freaking me out. Is this one of those things everyone knew but me? I feel kind of cheated, to be honest. When people knocked his act for being stale or predictable, I would always defend him by saying at least he was genuine. But it was all a lie.

I don't know what's real anymore....

So what?

I was born in Ft. Walton Beach, FL. At one point I went to school in Auburn Al and co-opped at Kennedy Space Center, FL.

Every other school term I wound up talking with somewhat of a FL surfer accent or like an AL redneck for a few days until I gravitated to my new surroundings.

People who grew up in England but lived a significant time in the US will wound up,speaking with a noticeable US accent when they return to England for a few days.

I would actually argue that his accent is real, since he's actually lived with folks who talk like that and he picked it up himself. It's just what happens.

Plus, his stage persona is his own act, and the accent is a mere part of it. But he's the one who created it so he gets to claim it to be his, and rightfully so.

I moved out of Baltimore in the early 60s, but even today if I fly back there for a visit I'm speaking like a native in about 10 minutes.

I've moved north of Boston and have lost a little bit of the accent but on certain words it will still come through loud and clear.
If I need a tune-up i'll head down there to visit and also get the aggressive driving refresh coarse.

I speak in multiple accents called upon when needed for comedic relief however, I do not make Cable Guy money doing it.

My natural speaking is very "newscaster" generic with no accent.

We have no accent in Nebraska.

He used to call in every day to a local radio station before he hit it big...and a lot of his jokes were political.

He caught the Redneck wave of popularity with Foxworthy, etc and is still riding it.

Eh, when I moved from Illinois to SW Missouri, everybody in Missouri said I talked too fast and sounded like I lived in Chicago or something (I didn't, just central Illinois.) I've lived here for quite awhile and the accent here is mild southern, nothing you wouldn't hear in Dallas or Oklahoma City. But Arkansas is just 40 miles away and they have some interesting variations and I can easily imitate that accent too. It's not as overdone as Larry the Cable Guy's southern drawl, but not far off. I also quickly recover my Illinois accent when I visit Chicago. The first couple days I get "Where are you from?" a lot, then not so much. If you've been exposed to various regional accents long enough you sorta blend into the one you are at currently. No big deal really. When I go to the west coast I quickly fall into a very neutral American accent, simply because a lot of people from here have that same accent. They didn't grow up here, they moved from places like Kansas City or St. Louis which has pretty neutral American accents.

If it makes you feel any better Larry, my souther accent is real. After a few drinks of likker, I damn near need an interpreter from Mississippi so the Yankees will understand me.
