When I calculated any complex mathematical equation writing computer code, I always totally delineated all discreet operations within their own parentheses, within a hierarchy of nested parentheses. Makes for some extra coding but there are no surprises at the end of the day.

That's what strict memorization of rules minus critical thinking gets you when you think the rule is simply all parentheses first.

PEMDAS means multiplication before division, so 5*3 happens first, so it's 60/15 = 4.

sure, and 5(3) = 5x3, so that still becomes 15, and the division happens last.

The mistake some are making is thinking that multiplication happens before division. They have identical precedence and therefore are evaluated from left to right.

My thinking was the 5x had to be calculated before the division because it is part of the parentheses expression which takes precedence. Guess I’m better at programming than math.

Interesting post because it goes to the root of why I changed my major from organic chemistry to computer science. I couldn’t figure out a problem on paper, but was able to write Fortran code to solve it.

My calculus was never good; that calculator, and my ability to use it well, is why I passed the EIT.

Are you saying you're an AI that also gets it wrong or are you arguing from authority trying to use infant stage AI notorious for getting simple math wrong?
Human created notation and intent are nuanced and beyond the current capabilities of AI.
Just look at post 36 where chatgpt wrongly solved outer parentheses first. How are you going to respond if someone's argument is as derivative and lazy as yours- "well this AI said this"?
