Kristin, bless her heart, has bailed him out this time. He is not facing any consequences of his behavior in Georgia. He is separated from that behavior and those episodes now and has landed in Florida. Georgia is ancient history. Mom cashed him out and he has moved on.

My stepfather, my mom and the rest of the family had to learn the hard lesson that my stepsister was not going to accept proper and constructive help with the constant safety net to save her. Family and friends had to agree together to stop bailing her out - as a unified front - to basically save her life. From what Doug has posted, it sounds like his family tried to reach out to Kristin to express why running off to florida may not be the best choice for him given his mental state. His response to that (they tried to sabotage my relationship with K!!!) is very familiar.

I’m not saying one has to hit rock bottom because sometimes that’s too late. But the reality of not having a safety net can usually cause one to self reflect without hitting rock bottom.

No one has all the answers. I’m just referencing my own experiences with a family member that was also pretty destructive in her manic episodes.

I hope Doug gets well and is able to repair his relationships with mom and brother.

The safety net died and he has struggled for the past 13 years, but is living in reality and is 100% self-supportive and not on the system. The enablement of his parent handicapped him for over 20 years and was a huge contributor to his 'failure to launch' status and total lack of motivation and accountability.

Very eye opening guy. I have a cousin who is about 79 who has been doing that very thing for over 40 years for her daughter. I suspect, if the daughter is lucky, the same thing will happen to her.

Last time I saw it, it looked like the conversation had turned to questions about the validity and sincerity of the timing of the renewed relationship with K. I would imagine that is why.

You think? I consider him a friend, but wish him the best. I have been in downward spirals and got help, but he won't do it. @UniqueDoug, I as a friend want to see you get help and actually take the help.

Although he and I never met, there was a time I thought of him as a friend. He managed to chip away at it until I really don't give a shit anymore. I hate seeing people in trouble but when they are their own worst enemy, what can you do? Grab a chair and a beer and watch the fire.
