Saw Fury for the first time this weekend. Weak!!
"The Germans are coming"... we have time to immolate a corpse on the front of the tank and drink toasts to things... but we leave much of our ammo supply "on the roof" so Brad can pop smoke and not get annihilated by all those panzerfaust toting Huns who seem to magically forget that weapon once contact is made. Bullshit.

No votes for Tropic Thunder?

I also didn't see Operation Petticoat on anyone's list.

The Boys in Company C (1978)- First day at Boot Camp

In 1967, five young men undergo boot camp training before being shipped out to Vietnam. Once they get there, the experience proves worse than they could have imagined.

Cadence (1990)

Cadence casts Charlie Sheen as a rebel soldier during the Vietnam era in the tradition of Montgomery Clift as Robert E.Lee Pruitt in From Here To Eternity. The film is also directed by dad Martin Sheen who has a nice role as the stockade sergeant.

Charlie's gone AWOL after his dad died and in a drunken did the stupid thing of hitting an MP. That got him 90 days in the stockade, where all the other prisoners there are black.

Play Dirty (1969)

It's the British version of the Dirty Dozen. Starring Michael Caine who is a combat veteran, Infantry, of the Korean War. He talks about it on youtube in a video.

Movie Plot: During World War II in North Africa, a group of British commandos disguised as Italian soldiers must travel behind enemy lines and destroy a vital Nazi oil depot.

I tend to like war films that feature a very strong back story, vs. just the hero saves the day.

Apocalypse Now
Empire of the Sun
Saving Private Ryan
Ran

Movie is based on an actual battle.

One late afternoon in 1966, in a Vietnamese rubber plantation, 108 young and mostly inexperienced Australian and New Zealand soldiers held off a force of 2500. This is their untold story.

battle-hardened Viet Cong soldiers closing in, their ammunition running out and casualties mounting, each man searches for the strength to triumph over an uncertain future with honor, decency and courage.

THE SIEGE OF JADOTVILLE tells the true story of the 1961 siege of a 150-member Irish U.N. battalion under Commander Patrick Quinlan by 3,000 Congolese troops, led by French and Belgian mercenaries working for mining companies.

I have watched almost every one listed so far.
I have my wish list set to catch war movies.
It's very hard to pick a favorite, except to say, the next one!
