Default Exhaust Question: Axle Back versus Muffler Replacement

I'm looking into doing a minor exhaust swap on my '17 Mustang GT.

I don't want to go with a full cat back system, as I am not really concerned about increasing the performance (I'm happy with where the car is at), and I want to keep the stock resonator as to not make the car too obnoxious. Highway Drone, etc.

That said, I have been pricing the Axle Back systems, and the Flowmaster American Thunder kit seems to be what I am looking for. It has the Super 44 Series Mufflers and is priced at about $600.00. Basically a bolt on kit.

However...

Pricing the mufflers alone, they are only about $90.00 each.

Sounds like I would save quite a bit of money if I just went to an exhaust shop and had them chop the stock mufflers and install the Super 44's? Is there any real advantage to an axle back system vs just swapping the mufflers?

My coworker said he would go to the muffler shop and have mufflers welded on. Only thing that might be a concern is having a CARB sticker. If that is not an issue for you, off to the shop and have new mufflers installed.

Are all the stock muffler clamps going to work with the new mufflers? Maybe there would be some fabrication necessary, which is why there's a kit.

I don't know, that's why I am asking.

Swapping mufflers shouldn't be a problem as long as you aren't monkeying with any emissions stuff. The only thing that would be of concern is noise, but the Super 44's in the Axle Back systems are by all accounts pretty tame, slightly louder than stock. Surprisingly, it's the quietist option from what I have read...some people are disappointed that it's too quiet.

I just want something different sounding than stock, without being too obnoxious and breaking the bank.

My buddy said it should give you a nice sound, and trust me when I say this dude is a Mustang expert. Not much he doesn't know about them. He said one of the problems with the axle back systems is tail pipe alignment, and just trying to get them even. Plus, just having mufflers welded on will save you a bunch of money and give you the sound you want.

You want it as loud as possible/legal, so the crowds can hear the imminent crash...

No problem. My buddy I was talking about co-owns a shop here in town called Super Six Motorsports. Even though his personal Mustangs are all V8 cars, they specialize in forced induction for the 6 cyl Mustang market, and Spec motors for racing. One of their cars is a record holder in its class.

If they were closer my wife would love an upgrade on her V6 Mustang
