Saw this the other day:
The depth of the problem - The Washington Post

Seems like the plot device from 'The Hunt for Red October'.

'Oh we found the wreck but it's too deep to be recovered'
Seems awfully convenient.

'Andre, you mean to tell me you lost another Submarine?' and shit...

I was mentioning the same movie and depth issue to a coworker today. We do not have any recovery equipment for those depths that I know of.

Although, I still think that plane is not down there.

Agreed, and that's precisely the point. Too deep on purpose...

Co-pilot of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 made desperate phone call seconds before plane went off radar: report

Share this URL. Co-pilot Fariq Abdul Hamid, 27, reportedly tried to make a mid-flight phone call.
Moments before Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 went off the radar, its co-pilot allegedly tried to make one last call for help.

Fariq Abdul Hamid may have made a call from his cell phone as the doomed Boeing 777 flew low over the Malaysian city of Penang, the New Straits Times reports.

His phone reportedly connected with a telecommunications tower in the city before it was cut off—so the call never went through.

Malaysian officials have not divulged details about whom Hamid may have been trying to contact.

"The telco's [telecommunications company's] tower established the call that he was trying to make. On why the call was cut off, it was likely because the aircraft was fast moving away from the tower and had not come under the coverage of the next one," sources told NST.

The aircraft carrying 239 people then traveled about 200 miles northwest of Penang before it vanished forever.

Satellite data suggests the Beijing-bound plane flew off course on March 8 and crashed into the southern Indian Ocean off the west coast of Australia. More than a month later, international search teams are investigating pings that may have come from the flight’s black box. They have yet to find wreckage from the plane.

Hamid would have turned 28 on April 1. Relatives say the young pilot was very close to his mom.

"If Fariq could make one call before the plane disappeared, it would have been to her,” said 18-year-old cousin Nursyafiqah Kamarudin.

In this map provided on Saturday, April 12, 2014, by the Joint Agency Coordination Centre, details are presented in the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 in the southern Indian Ocean.
The evening before his flight departed from Kuala Lumpur, Hamid reportedly sent a text message through the WhatsApp Messenger.

His phone was then “detached.”

"This is usually the result of the phone being switched off. At one point, however, when the airplane was airborne, between waypoint Igari and the spot near Penang (just before it went missing from radar), the line was 'reattached,’” sources told NST.

View Gallery Search for Malaysia Airlines plane continues, as relatives are overcome with grief.
The paper cautioned that a “reattachment” doesn’t necessarily signal that a call was made. It could also mean that Hamid just tried switching his phone on again.

Telecommunications experts have said that it is possible for phones to connect at an altitude of 7,000 feet.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said Saturday that the search would likely continue some time. He was "very confident" signals the pings heard by an Australian vessel in the Southern Indian Ocean were coming from the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777's black boxes.

..We have "very considerably narrowed down the search area, but trying to locate anything 4.5 kilometers (2.8 miles) beneath the surface of the ocean about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) from land is a massive, massive task, and it is likely to continue for a long time to come," Abbott said.

The underwater search zone is currently a 1,300-square-kilometer (500-square-mile) patch of the seabed, about the size of Los Angeles.

The batteries that power the black boxes last only about a month, and that window has already passed. Finding the devices after the power runs out will be extremely difficult due to the extreme depth of the water in the search area.

The searchers want to pinpoint an exact location before they send down submersible robots to search for the wreckage. Up to 10 planes and 14 ships were searching Saturday.

Why after 5 Weeks this is reported? Wouldn't they do this research as soon as they felt their was some possibility of foul play? How many other passenger phones made some sort of contact with towers?

Malaysia Airlines Plane in Afghanistan, Pakistan? Report Says Missing Flight MH 370 ‘Hijacked’ by Terrorists to Kandahar Province

A report is saying that missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH 370 is located in Kandahar Province, and a terrorist named “Hitch” is behind the disappearance.

A Russian newspaper, Moskovsky Komsomolets, said the plane was hijacked and taken to Afghanistan and the passengers are now being held captive.

“Flight MH370 Malaysia Airlines missing on March 8 with 239 passengers was hijacked,” the Russian report says. ”Pilots are not guilty; the plane was hijacked by unknown terrorists. We know that the name of the terrorist who gave instructions to pilots is ‘Hitch.’ The plane is in Afghanistan not far from Kandahar near the border with Pakistan.”

The report said that the passengers were divided into seven different groups and are living in huts with little food.

However, the Moskovsky Komsomolets report didn’t offer much in terms of sources–including names or even the identity of the intelligence agency it got its information from.

And Australian search teams are focusing on scouring the southern Indian Ocean for the plane and its black boxes. A submarine is now being used to look for the wreckage.

The alleged hijacking has not been confirmed by Malaysia. The Russian news report also said the terrorists are bargaining with Chinese and Malaysian officials, which also wasn’t confirmed by either country.

There were reports more than a month ago from The Independent newspaper–before Malaysian officials announced that the flew over the Indian Ocean and crashed–saying officials were exploring the possibility the plane may have been hijacked to Pakistan or Afghanistan.

The Independent said at the time: “The missing Malaysian airlines flight MH370 may have been deliberately flown under the radar to Taliban-controlled bases on the border of Afghanistan, it has emerged, as authorities said that the final message sent from the cockpit came after one of the jet’s communications systems had already been switched off.”

The Pakistani Taliban has previously denied hijacking the plane.

A robotic submarine looking for the lost Malaysian jet continued its second seabed search on Wednesday as up to 14 planes were to take to the skies for some of the final sweeps of the Indian Ocean for floating debris from the ill-fated airliner.

The U.S. Navy’s Bluefin 21 submarine began its second 20-hour underwater mission on Tuesday after cutting short its first because the ocean waters where it was sent were too deep, officials said.

The unmanned sub is programmed to hover 30 meters (100 feet) above the seabed, but it started searching atop a patch that was deeper than the sub’s maximum operating depth of 4,500 meters (15,000 feet), the search coordination center and the U.S. Navy said.

A built-in safety feature returned the Bluefin to the surface and it was not damaged, they said.

The data collected by the sub was later analyzed and no sign of the missing plane was found, the U.S. Navy said.

Crews shifted the search zone away from the deepest water before sending the Bluefin back for Tuesday’s mission, the U.S. Navy said.

The search coordination center said 11 military planes and three civilian planes would search a 55,000-square-kilometer (21,000-square-mile) expanse of ocean on Wednesday centered 2,000 kilometers (1,300 miles) northwest of the Australian west coast city of Perth. Eleven ships would also join the search.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
