I used to have a Valentine One. Not joking, I bought it in around 2007. I still own it. It turns on, but doesn't seem to work correctly?

I know V1 used to let you mail it in for discounted upgrades. So they still do that? This unit was bought new, literally 20 years ago haha.

Or should I buy a Uniden R7?

They still do. I upgraded to a new model which now does updates via Wi-Fi. Still the best as far as I’m concerned.

IMO, Valentine has been asleep at the switch for a long time. They were great when they first invented using two antennas, one pointed forward and the other backward, in order to determine whether the radar source was ahead, behind or alongside you. But since they were asleep at the switch, they let their patent expire and the result was the Escort Max360 which is much nicer. The Valentine device's user interface feels primitive. The mute button is on the unit, rather than on the power plug, so you have to reach for it. (Of course you might have to reach for it if the power plug is inconveniently located, but that's not the case in my vehicles.) Valentine is better than nothing, but I wouldn't get another one. I keep mine in my less-used car. The truck gets the Escort.

My experience is just opposite, my wife’s car has the 360, but I’m used to the Valentine..The phone app solves some of your mentioned shortcomings with a number of programming adjustments. I’m old and set in my ways!

I thought I saw one of them will start beeping when you're within like 1/4 mile of red light camera/speed camera and tell you "500 feet ahead" and then "250 feet ahead" then "100 feet ahead".

Something like that.

That's what I need. Red light cameras all around this area and I often travel in unfamiliar areas.

The unit connects via WIFI to update. I have it paired to my phone and it updates automatically on Mondays. It is subscription based, I think I paid for a 3 year subscription. Iowa likes to throw the red light and speed cameras up at a moments notice. The warning saved me from a new on which they just went live for tickets on. They ran it for 30 days giving people warnings and then tickets, 111 tickets in the first week. They don't count as points or go on your license but the money generation for the locals is what they are after.

The Max 360 was nice, I ran it with the Dashcam 2 hardwired into the mirror with a mirror tap. I run the MaxCam the same way with the mirror tap on a blend mount to the rear mirror.
Works great and no cords hanging from the detector to the power plug.
If you sign up on the website, they send out enough discounts of $70-$100 off about once a month. You can also check Amazon, they had it for $40 cheaper than Escorts site.

The Escort calls out the red light and speed cameras and tells you distance. It also shows when you are clear of the speed camera.

I am certainly not a RADAR detector guy, but I'm guessing that the function you want is a GPS map function, as opposed to the detector detecting anything. Nice feature, but if that's what you want, there are already free choices for that function on phones and vehicle mapping systems. I do see an advantage of having all the functions in a single unit, so it basically comes down to whether you value this function in the RD itself, or just using WAZE, etc.

Bingo. They appease the citizens with the lack of points and at the same time reach into their pockets for the money.
