That would work. Just remember, the owner of the car buys the beer. And I suppose also the person for making sure this > or this > doesn't happen.

Another set back. My tuner said I need to fix a few things before he will do the tune. He still thinks there is something wrong with the opti. And the TB won't properly close all the way when it gets warmed up. It wants to stick open just enough to run at 950 - 1000 rpms. Also my exhaust is closer to the fiberglass than before and is getting it hot enough to make it burn (not flames but melting/smoking). Both the opti and TB were purchased used from the CF members. I will never buy anything from CF members again. I think most of the folks are good honest people. I've just had sh!t for luck with nearly everything I've gotten. It just isn't worth it. This is not an area where "you win some, you lose some" pays off.

Yeah, I'm not positive yet but when it's cold it snaps back all the way. There is a small set screw that the linkage stops on. When it gets hot it stops short, you can put your finger on it and push it back with little presure. My tuner (whom I will refer to as Jim) also noted that it was not closing properly. If the linkage was at fault I think he would have aknowledged it instead. I had access to a 52 mm Holley before but I didn't get it since I already had the 58. I'm checking to see if the guy still has it. I don't think I'll be loosing any power since I felt the 58 was maybe a little overkill anyway.

52 should be plenty. I wonder what is causing it to bind when warm?
Maybe it was rem-manned by a shady company. |

The guy I bought it from said it was the Summit house brand (not sure who makes them). It looks clean like it doesn't have many miles on it. Who knows maybe when the butterfly's heat up they swell just enough to rub. It doesn't take much and if I tap on the accelerator, about 1/2 the time it will drop down to a better idle.

I thought about it, but so much time has passed. I've had it for probably a year myself and there's no telling how long he had it before he sold it. I would think that Summit would have some kind of a limit. I went ahead and bought the Holley from a friend of my son. It is almost new, he had only ran in for a couple of days. He only asked $75 for it and I thought that was a great deal for a real nice piece.

Damn I hate to ask such a noob question but I was wondering what any of you guys know about these optis. I'm hoping to get first hand feedback on any of these you actually dealt with. You can do hours of research but for every good review you find you get a bad one right behind it.
CMS $135 Cheapest, lot of compliments but also some complaints, Ebay seller so not sure what good a lifetime warranty will do. Orielly's $212 Couldn't find much feedback on this, but also has lifetime and is readily available (richporter brand) Summit $249 Again not much feedback Delphi $260-280 Complete mystery, found claims of being the actual mfg of the AC Delco unit. That doesn't sound logical. AC Delco $360-380 w/core I actually found complaints of these failing also. Widely believed to be the best on the market but also the most expensive. |

MSD
Installed in May 2008, no failures at sea level, 7,000 feet, runs to Death Valley, five Bomber Runs, Sequoia Park and three track events. One thing to be straight, I do wash my engine with a water hose!!! Yes, it is the most expensive opti in the market. |

Thanks for the info I have read a lot of negative about MSD that has been posted over the past year or so. From what I've read (if you wanna believe it) they used to be top shelf but have let their quality fall recently. The negative I read out weighed the good enough that I left it off my list.

The fact is that there are few guys in the forums that actually push their C4s. These cars do tolerate abuse and I think the problem is that they buy an expensive opti and expect it to outperform the OEM. There are no HP gains by buying a MSD opti. I had the OEM, Dynaspark (by far the biggest Piece of Shit ever made) and MSD. |

I decided to take a look into the Delphi unit sold by GM Auto Computers (Ken Anderson). His posts claim Delphi to be the supplier for AC Delco. When I asked if his optis have the mitsubishi optical unit he said he didn't know. Now call me strange if you want but if you were going to claim to sell the same part as OEM AC Delco wouldn't you know what they were made of? Especially since that part seems to be what sets AC Delco above the rest.

Well I bit the bullet and got an AC Delco opti. BUT, I got it from Amazon for $361 so I hope its not some kind of knock off. I'll see when I get the package. It could be a reman too. The web page didn't say it was a reman but you never know. They also didn't ask for the core either. I will be looking inside so maybe I learn a little more.

The construction of the dynaspark is FAR superior to any aftermarket unit. I installed the gen II style with the vacum lines on my 93... And I havent been happier. It starts faster and healthier then it ever did before. The car never ran poorly so I cant comment on drive quality but. This thing has been bullet proof so far. |

This is one of the catches of using the forums for info on stuff. I did many hours of research on optis and of course you find not only the "happy ever after" stories you also find the horror stories. During my research it appeared that both the MSD and the Dynaspark were "happy ever after" early on but in the last 1 or 2 years the quality dropped and there are too many horror stories. Who knows what to believe. I firmly believe that once someone posts up with a horror story all the know-it-all's pick it up and the next thing you know everyone is saying "I heard they aren't any good anymore". Actually (according to my research, not first hand) one of the better deals for the money IMO is the CMS opti. There are a lot of "happy ever after" stories and while there are some horror stories the ratio is well into the good. The dude that posts up for CMS admits they are not as good as OEM and is trying to acquire better OEM parts to improve his opti. Even the AC Delco had a few horror stories but that's what I finally went with, I guess partly because I cheaped out the first time and met with bad results. I received it yesterday and the box says "made in mexico".

I wanted to follow up on this opti. I took it apart and it DID have the Mitsubishi sensor. It also has a nice (silicone looking) seal on both sides. In fact I didn't feel it was necessary to use silicone to put it back together (See Pic). So, I'm glad I went with the AC Delco.
I'm also having a problem now with my transmission. I posted up at CF so if any of you guys can help I could use it. 93 auto code 22 and won't shift - Corvette Forum |

Ok I read your CF thread and this are my two cents.
I had a similar issue with my 700R4 back then. I played with the TV cable and ended up with your problem. I kept moving and spinning that thing and it was shifting earlier than before but, once I got it there I left it alone. Check the TPS voltage, those things work together. BTW, the A/C Opti is a good unit. The bad thing is that for 93 it is not vented however, my 92 opti gave me 195,000 miles. The DynaCrappyspark gave me 600 miles. That was the biggest piece of mechanical excrement I've ever purchased. |
