Default [Woodworking] Sewing Stool

the boss wanted a new one, as the old one has failing joints. So i'm working on a new one, Oak, with mortise and tenon joinery.

still need to cut the dado for the bottom to fit into, as well as the rabbit for the seat to set into on the top. this is a dry fit, strap clamp is in place only to keep it from falling apart.

seat cushion is 14x16, so dimensions were based on that. legs are 18 tall.

Looks great. Did the boss want the center support offset so she can rest a foot back against the cross brace?

My late grandmother was a seamstress and had a wide center support for that reason.

That's a nice bench. Wish I was up to that skill level. Mine would probably look like Homer Simpson made it.
Me and a bunch of friends were playing when we were kids and broke my mom's sewing bench... I still have a limp.
Dad re-upholstered it since it was being repaired and put a nice cushion on it as she had a bad back and hip.
I screwed with all the machines settings once and lived to tell about it too.

No, it was set back so it doesn’t get stepped on. It helps stiffen the legs.

Looks nice; should last several lifetimes.

Construction is similar to a small table I made about 6 months ago. Do you pin your tenons? I usually do, although with today's adhesives I'm not sure it's as necessary as it was in the past.

No. The tenons are only 3/4” long.

got all the rabbits, dados and slots cut today, final sanding and marking (so i can get it back together the correct way), and staining of all parts today.

let that cure overnight, glue up tomorrow, and then poly after that.

sorry, no pics.

glue up day (stained yesterday):

small project, only used 9 clamps.

also a view of my new mortising machine, which really helped with this project.

likely 2 coats of poly tomorrow, one early in the day, one late.

Nice project. As a former upholsterer I have to ask what the cushion will look like. To me, this just screams for a nice needlepoint or tapestry cushion.

cushion already exists, it's just some fabric over some padding, stapled to a wood base. i'll get a full pic when done.
