Default Science Confirms That Dogs Can Recognize A Bad Person...

In the study, the dogs went through a variety of different scenarios. In one of them, a volunteer was helping another person open a jar that was tightly sealed while the dog was present. In another variation, the volunteer was passive. In yet other, the volunteer refused to help at all.

After the dog observed the behavior, the volunteer would try to give the dog a treat.

The volunteer who helped open the jar and the passive volunteer were equally as likely to be successful in giving the dog a treat. However, if the volunteer was nice, the dog was much more likely to take the treat from their hand.

But when the volunteer who didn’t offer to help open the jar tried to offer the dog a treat, the dog ignored them. The dog didn’t trust the person who was mean.

This shows incredible perception. The dog could get a treat, free and clear, but he refused because he sensed that the person was not nice. It really says a lot about their ability to judge someone in just one interaction.

“These results suggest that not only dogs are highly skilled at understanding human pointing gestures, but also they make inferences about the reliability of a human who presents cues and consequently modify their behavior flexibly depending on the inference.”

Take notice the next time you’re around your dog and a new person who you’re unsure about. If they seem judgy, it may be a good idea to steer clear of that person!

Our dogs love everybody. They especially go nuts for our neighbor across the street. Dan is not a dog person, but when our dogs see him, and if he acknowledges them, they will pull us to him so they can greet him. Did I mention he's not a dog person?

Generally, that is the case. The dogs know he is a good guy, and want desperately to turn him into a "dog person". They know that having more good guys on their team is always a good thing.

Our current dog hasn't liked three people, he was correct every time.

Miss Belle has been "indifferent" to 3-4 people, and tried to bite one guy on the ass. She is also batting 1.000.

The guy she tried to bite on the ass was a guy my daughter knew before Belle even came home to live with us. The first time I met him, I was sure he was some kind of creepy weirdo. Belle was maybe 6 months old when she first met him, and I know that you aren't supposed to laugh when your dog misbehaves, but the SECOND time she went for the bite on the ass, I couldn't help but laugh out loud.

My daughter still hung out with the guy for about a year. When he wouldn't come over to our house any more because Belle "looked at him" whenever he was there, daughter figured it out, and wrote the guy off.

Good girl Belle! Good girl! Extra bacon for you!

I haven't owned any other breeds but GSD's seem quite perceptive.

I've had some other breeds, and mutts. Nothing compares to the intelligence of a GSD IMO. Miss Belle understands EVERY word I say, and anyone who doubts it admits they are wrong after just a few times of hanging out with us.

Today, one of the "funny" gifs was a parrot talking about "see the squirrel". Miss Belle heard it from the other room, and came running in to look out the deck door thinking there were squirrels on the deck (which there often are, and she loves to chase them off). She seemed confused for a minute or so about who was talking about the squirrels, looked directly at my computer, figured it was coming from there, and gave me her classic "WTF dude?" look. I LOL'ed!

My neighbor, who has had dogs all his life, freaked out the first time he was here, and I asked Belle a question, and she unquestionably answered me in a way that even non-dog-people could understand.

She "talks" to me all day, every day. It is up to me if I am going to listen. I always do.

Back when I was in jr. high school, we had a dog that loved pretty much everybody. Well everybody except for a classmate of mine that delivered our paper every afternoon. The dog went absolutely nuts every time he showed up.

About half way through the school year, the paperboy stabbed his mother to death one morning before going to school!
