Default A wonderful evening

Long read. Maybe you won't get it, maybe you just had to be there.

The wife and I had not been out to dinner in a long time. Partly because the Covid thing had everything closed down, partly because the restaurants here aren't that good anyway. So we decide to go out any way. Let me set the scene:

An 1880s renovated hotel and a restaurant and bar next to it about 50 feet away, all owned by the same guy. A beautiful courtyard shaded by sycamore trees where the out door dining is set up. This is normally used as an intimate music venue that only holds 100 people. They have blues music there every Monday night during the summer. The hotel porch is the stage, the restaurant (closed now for indoor dining) is behind us. Because of reduced capacity mandates, there are only about 25 people there.

The band is a blues/jazz quartet led by Nancy Wright, a tenor sax player and singer. I've seen her before a long time ago when she played with Elvin Bishop, and I was looking forward to seeing her again.

With the limited seating. I made reservations two weeks ago. We get seated, it's about 85 degrees in the sycamore tree's shade, with a light breeze. I had beer battered fish & chips, my wife had goat cheese ravioli with a white wine sauce. I'm drinking pints of stout, the wife is the designated driver, so diet coke. The food was unusually excellent for what we usually find around here.

After we finish dinner the music began. Low key blues/jazz meant to be background music for dinner.

I've got a good three pint stout buzz going and at the end of the first set Nancy Wright steps away after introducing the guitar player, a young kid I have never heard of. In memory of Fleetwood Mac's Peter Green passing he says he's going to play Albatross, a song I had almost forgotten about over the years. Well, the kid absolutely nailed it.

I could count on the fingers of one hand the amount of times that music has taken me to such a peaceful place as it did tonight. I hope in some small way this link can do the same for you in these troubled times.

It did, thank you. Great story about your nice evening. I'm on a few pint buzz myself and sometimes there's not much better....

**** it. I'm thinking about getting into the Jim Beam and listening to a lot of Peter Green music tonight.

I found an instructional video on YouTube for Albatross and I'm going to learn how to play it if it kills me.

I can't play the guitar much, but I've got one.

Chordify. You can play every song of every album from every artist with the chords in front of you. I think it's $1.25 a month or $21.00 a year. Well worth it.

Here is one of my favorite covers invented by Peter Green & Fleetwood Mac

I saw that band in that era in a nightclub in San Francisco. The vocalist, Mickey Thomas went on to join the Jefferson Starship who had many hit songs with him.

Elvin Bishop still makes that song part of every show, but does it as an instrumental.

No, Peter Green and Fleetwood Mac did.

Elvin Bishop Fooled Around And Fell In Love.
Great tune.

I'm confused.
I was under the impression that Elvin Bishop sang Fooled Around And Fell In Love.

No. That was Mickey Thomas' voice. Mickey owes his entire career to that song. Elvin Bishop can sing, but he has nowhere near that kind of voice. That's why ever since Mickey left the band in the 70s, Bishop has played it as an instrumental. It's curious that Bishop wrote his biggest hit song and let someone else sing it, but if you ever met him you would understand. He's a very modest and humble guy. I've met him a number of times and more than once he's bought me a beer. He likes to mingle with the crowd before the show and hang out for awhile.

In the video you posted Bishop is playing the red ES335.

Ohhh, I did not know that.
I do recognize the voice in Starship.
Thanks for the lesson.
