Structual engineering.....
OK, I see all these krazy building designs all over fakebook, and wonder about the stability of ANY of them.....sticking up 150 stories high and with the wildest curves and landings/balconies/glass/holes/etc.....
WTF, that is ALL just some dream, OR is any of it REAL??? I fail to understand how in HELL any of those structures will last over 20 years due to RUST in the steel frames, much less what kind of rust stopping protection could be used, and then stopping the obvious wind damage leading up to metal fatigue...... Watt say YAWL??? |

Burn Khalifa is only 167 floors tall. 200 only exists within the confines of a feeble mind....for now.

There was a series on PBS about building different skyscrapers in various spots around the world, and the problems they had to work around. Don't know if they're available to stream but I would guess they are.
At any rate, screw all those amateurs, we won't know anything until Yaddy checks into this thread. . |

They are using a technique called finite element analysis. Model a part as tiny elements, each with three dimensional forces acting on it, and interacting with the elements surrounding it.
When I was in college, early 80's, it was being developed, waiting for computer power to increase where it could be useful. Today, you can build a 3d model of say, an automotive part, in an inexpensive desktop cad program, then apply forces to it, and it will render colors to show the related stresses and deformations. Then you can query any element and get the calculated numbers. Scale that up to a building using more costly software and a more powerful computer, and you can do the same type of analysis. |

The twisting shapes of modern super tall structures are due to modeling wind loads. This is an advancement of three dimensional finite analysis, incorporating the 4th dimension of time. The odd shapes are to break up wind eddies to prevent low frequency resonance. The idea being to eliminate the possibility of failure that occurred in early long span suspension bridges.

I'm thinking that skyscraper in the show was built in the US, but not sure. But if memory serves, the structural part was external, the idea of which came from how insects have an external skeleton, unlike vertebrates which of course is internal. And it was twisted upward to reduce the effect of strong winds, as you noted. |
