You're sounding a lot like all those guys with old Chevy pickups or whatever that 'have Corvette motor's' in them. 99.9% of the time, like this time, it's bullshit. But you know that.
Reminds me of when I bought my 1st Chevrolet “Z71” truck in the early 1990’s. Back then the Z71 fender sticker was a new thing. The salesman said “these Z71 trucks have the Corvette motor”.

The short version of the Powerglide was a 16 spline unit used from the early 1950's to 1964. The case was 25 3/8 inches long. From 1965 up, the case was lengthened to 27 5/8 inches and the spline count went to 27 teeth. The pre-'62 'glides were cast iron and many were air cooled.

Your car was a 10-12 year old beat-on used musclecar in the '70's like most. It could have had a shorter earlier 'glide installed. But no way to tell it was out of a '62 or earlier Corvette unless you ran the serial number, which you didn't do.
Telling us you had one of the rare 375 HP L-78 '66 SS396 cars and it came with a 'special short Corvette Powerglide' as original equipment might be bought on Facebook or at a car show, but not on this forum. We're sharper than that.

Have I told you how awesome you are lately? You friggin' ROCK, STS!!

Me too. Big, brown, and cone-shaped. And absolutely fascinating.

My grandmother had given my older brother a years long subscription to National Geographic. And our school library had them going back to 1916!

The first real ones was a hippie couple at Stinson Beach and she was topless. I was 6 at the time and she was attractive and very well endowed. My brother and I were polite and tried not to stare while dad talked to her and her man. (we were camping on the beach and they visited US!) But we did sneak furtive glances.

Only 1968 and later. Even the '66-'67 427 Corvette got the lowly Powerglide. TH400 was not an option yet.

Nice backwalk, STS. Did your '66 SS have the clutch pedal stuff already partially there or was it always an auto car? By the late '70's, MANY of these cars were already Frankensteins and pieced together.

Moving your car to a 4 speed M22 was a smart choice. Our mutual friend, who is NOT a bullshitter, said your car was very fast. I did tell you that you were awesome.....you just proved it with that classic dodge. Well played.

I agree. But his deflection was clever. When I left him an 'out' by inferring it could have been a field replacement transmission, that was what it 'became'.
My honest opinion? His SS, like 90% of them, was a base 325HP car that came with a Powerglide. He beat on it, blew up the trans, put a 4 speed in it and modified it and there you go. The chance of it being a numbers L-78 car are slim to none. It's that 'older I get better I was' syndrome.

You should have gently suggested that someone had replaced the 396 with a 426 Hemi and that the 4-speed was an A833. He would have snatched at that like a crack whore going after a crumb on the floor.

Incidentally, A833's were the same length as 727's, but one had to build a custom shifter mount to make it happen.

He actually had a '70 440 Roadrunner with that 833 trans when I knew him. I never saw the Chevelle. So he knows Mopar stuff a bit.
I had a '66 Coronet with a 440 and the factory A833 trans with a 3.23 Sure Grip out back. Car was fast, but cheesy build quality compared to the GM stuff I had. It sure handled well with the torsion bars, though, and only had 64,000 miles on it. I sold it for $3000 or $3500 30 years ago and just found it again on line for sale. They let the paint go to hell and got rid of the Inland shifter and added disc brakes, but very cool it didn't get wrecked. Click image for larger version

Hmmmm. Last time we discussed it you told me it was a 440 car. Strange. Click image for larger version

Dunno. I expected him to contribute to the 4th of July Hoedown thread, since it was about him, but crickets.

You’d think a guy with his flexible work schedule could participate in both forums regularly.

Blew the engine in a 67 GTO a day before prom and had a new one in it in time for our dates. Took a team like you see there but we got it done.
