Why do people troll for attention.

Trolls are, most likely driven by a need for attention. “Their comments often spark attention from others, so it can give the illusion of being important, And this sense of importance and centre of attention usually compensates for how they really feel in their life.

I guess this qualifies as "bad attention is still attention" because he sure as hell isn't getting his ego boosted. Unless his ego is his ass and he likes it served on a platter.
He has yet to come out on the winning side of any thread.

Bad attention - good attention - doesn't matter. He just needs to be obnoxious to be heard.

When you witness a crime, do you ignore it?

Trolls are forum criminals. Ignoring them is being complicit. Calling them out for what they are is akin to pointing to a criminal getting away and shouting "There he is! He's in that Amazon van !!"

They're what I call contrarians.

I've known a guy IRL since I was 12 who always chooses the opposite side of every subject. He's left handed and wrong brained (also liberal). IMO he doesn't do it on purpose, it's a subconscious mental fault.

Another guy I've known since I was in my twenties lies every time he opens his mouth (also left handed and wrong brained but apolitical). He can tell the same story once a day, every day, for a year and it's different every time. If the inconsistencies are pointed out he does not recognize them as such and will tire you out denying it. This seems to be an associated mental condition except that the previous guy I mentioned has a story which never changes.

My theory is that unlike most, some don't recognize the effect that being incorrect has on their relationship with others. Most can recognize a falsehood in the blink of an eye regardless of the source or subject, but some can't. Other than this one thing they're good trustworthy people. The problem seems to hold no priority in their thought process. Probably a genetic fault? Like being born with a certain eye color.

Only saw the first character I spoke of once in the last twenty years and we got into an "argument" over Buffalo Bill Cody and Wild Bill Hickok. He had them turned around (ie: Wild Bill Cody). Funny thing is he fancies himself to be a historian of the age having extensively studied the Civil War as a hobby. The guy has never been out of state to my knowledge so without any first hand experience on the subject it's easy for me to see how he'd be confused on the matter and I simply let it go by changing the subject.. But the dude almost had me doubting myself

Our resident troll isn't a contrarian, and he doesn't do it on accident. He knows exactly what he's doing. It must be a sad, lonely life to go camping alone when you have a wife at home and beg for attention from strangers on the internet. Pretty sad really.

Agree. STD is not a contrarian. He's a liberal and that by default puts him on the opposite side of every issue.
