THE phrase “My word is my bond” can be traced back in English Literature to Shakespeare's times and is referred to in the Merchant of Venice. The phrase develops and in 1670 it appears in J Ray's English Proverbs in the form of “An honest man's word is as good as his bond.”

What do you call someone who is true to their word?
reputable. Synonyms:honest, sincere, fine, genuine, decent, truthful, principled, irreproachable, good, upstanding.

I never did business with people who's word was not good, probably why i retired in my 50's.

What a sad and empty life. He tells you all the great things he does but deep down an empty soul.

Seems like a regional thing to me.

I've had lots of contractors work on my place. New garage built, paved driveway, new vinyl siding, new counter tops/cabinets, dug up and replaced sewage pipes a few times, tiled floor, insulated widows. All that probably equates to 3 times the original value of the house but never paid a dime up front and it was done on handshake/verbal contract.

No problem, but I wouldn't recommend that to anyone living near a big city.

My guess is that will depend on what you say next after announcing you were done and never coming back about 50 posts ago.

I live in the NYC area. I used to own 2 investment properties as well as the house I live in. Between repairs and upgrades to the three buildings, there was probably not a year where I paid contractors less than $25K, and a few times over $100K. All handshake agreements, always time and materials, whenever possible (which is 90+% of the time), when the work is complete, the contractor gets paid before he leaves the site. That's how we all like it. I've been working with some of them for more than 20 years.

The downside to this is that my guys are getting old now. My plumber just turned 65 last month. The youngest guy I regularly work with is my electrician, he's 54 and talking about trying to move his license to FLA to work for a few more years, and then retire.
