Do people really claim that? One of my roommates in college was in ROTC on full scholarship, so he not only had to do the weekly stuff on campus, he also did summer training assignments and stuff. When he graduated in 1984, at that time, the military was downsizing. The higher ups wanted to find some number of graduates who would decline their commission, and he ended up being one of them. I have never heard him call himself a "veteran".

I also knew some guys from high school that got talked into volunteering for all kinds of great assignments (recruiters can be slick talkers), only to later be "not selected" for what they originally asked for, and offered something much more mundane. Some turned it down, and I never heard them say they "almost joined".

Of course, all of this was before Al Gore invented the internet.

We get people requesting access to our closed group and there are a series of 4 questions that have to be answered appropriately. One of them is "Which branch of the service are you in or were you part of?"

We get stuff like, "I almost joined but couldn't.....my brother went in but I didn't because blah blah blah....My husband is XYZ rank..." You get the picture. We immediately block them from the group even though they can see both public pages.

You think the humor here is bad? Nothing compared to some of the shit on those pages and group.
