Default What a pain in the ass...

Oil pressure sensor went bad. The ONLY way to gain access to it is to remove the intake. While this car is 10 years old ('09), it only has 33k miles on it. I had to pull the intake twice because I thought the small vacuum line in the back had become disconnected.

Complicating issues, the wiring harness ends are getting brittle. Had issues with one of the injector connections. First time I did it, the computer went nuts, complaining of downed cylinders, active handling issues, blah blah blah. I got "most" of that fixed yesterday, but it still bitched about being lean in both banks, and the active handling was still borked. Also had to replace all 8 plug wires. The little white plastic center on most of them (coil pack connection) turned to dust and fell out when I removed them.

Today, I basically tore it all back down, and put it back together and now it's perfect. All that for a $50 sensor. God only knows how much the dealer would have charged for that job.

I do all of my own work, that way I know it's done right. Besides, you can always drink beer and work on cars.

He sent his staff to college so when she gets out he won't be able to afford to have her work on his cars.

That is annoying when parts fail with minimal use.

In terms of computer going nuts you should also keep an eye on ground points, particularly chassis grounds.

Vettes have long been plagued by corroded or loose ground points.
The needles on the gauges will pulse like crazy and throw all types of erroneous error codes.

The oil sending units are yes indeed a PITA. And GM in their infinite wisdom, put them in the easiest place to reach on the whole car....

It kind of pisses me off that modern automotive engineers can't come up with a better material other than plastic for under-hood electrical connections. Inevitably they get brittle and break from the engine heat. It's bullshit really.

I changed plugs on the Highlander when we had it and two of the four connectors basically fell apart when I pulled them off of the coil. Since we were going to dump that car within a year, I just zip tied the mother effers and called it a day. It worked, but it was fairly half-ass. Oh well, somebody elses problem now!

An old joke with the C3 guys about heater cores...

GM suspended the Heater Core in mid air on the assembly line, and built the car around it.

Damn that is crazy! Makes my wheel bearing assembly replacement look like I just added air to the tires comparably speaking.

That is the beauty of making your own damn car......rebuilding something you like into what you want, your way.....

Just too damn bad that most of the replacement parts sold today are junk.....

and the beauty of the vette, is the fantastic plastic.....no fugly body rust which basically is the one single thing that kills off other cars....

can always pull a body off the chassis, and change out the entire chassis, and if a good welder buddy is around, pay him to redo the entire frame/chassis if necessary....long as we can buy new steel that is....

back some 21? years ago I had the entire HVAC system outta my '72, I fergit the reason why, but the firewall was totally naked and when I put it back I did it my way.....in lots of small but time saving spots, and when redoing the heater core ~3 years ago it took me a total time of 4 hours....and I used the ill fitting aluminum core they sell these daze....witch does just fine in FLORIDA......

AND gotta love the simplicity of the SBC, '89 roller block, rockers, L98 heads, LT1 induction, HEI up top where GOD intended, because even HE can't make sparks and water mix......
