It would have to blow me in order to get around the hideous looks.

We take our EV from N. Alabama to St. Louis routinely to see family (425 miles door to door - 7h10m est on google maps). While the stops are longer than I'd like, having the 800v architecture means we can charge to 80% and get to the next leg of the trip in under 20 minutes. Enough time to grab a snack, use restrooms, and then get going. Still a longer stop than I like, but having it cost $0.00 to do so is awfully nice. (It costs zero because when we got the EV, we got years of free DC fast charging. We still charge at home with our level 2 charger about once every 2 weeks or so using as much power as it takes to run a week's worth of laundry through an electric dryer).

We can stop in Clarksville, TN and Mt Vernon, IL for the charges, then stop just outside STL for a final charge for the time we're in STL, OR we can use our portable level 2 charger at my dad's place and slow charge it overnight. With the lack of DC fast chargers, we do have options and other places we can stop when needed or alter where we stop (Franklin, TN and Paducah, KY) for fast charging.

Ideal? No.
Fast? No.
Cheaper? Yes.
Comfortable? Yes.
Happy wife? Absolutely.

That last one makes it worth it to me. And using her EV around town means we're not buying gas as often as before. Yeah, my truck still sees Costco and Home Depot runs, as well as travel trailer pull duty, but that's about it. So our monthly fuel costs are seriously lower too.

If weather is possibly bad or too cold, then we have my truck as a fallback, but the EV does make the trip nice and peaceful. Any EV with less than an 800v charging architecture that cant charge to 80% in 20 minutes is behind the curve.

EV's are still in the early adopter phase of the product lifecycle. ICE's are at the maturity point. There is a lot of innovation going on with EV's (motor design efficiencies, different battery components and design, etc) and just as the 800v architecture provides faster charging, I'm sure other innovations will make them less a pain in the ass. The early adopters get to deal with that - for better and for worse.

I don't see EV's as THE solution, but AN option. If it can reduce our dependence on oil, then it's something we can consider. But I'm not an EV diehard - my wife wanted it and got what she wanted. But I DO love to drive them - they're fast and fun. And as an IT guy, the tech is fun and interesting to me.

Then, Elon goes and blows up his Supercharger network team... THAT throws things into yet another mess. I personally hope the other networks (Electrify America, ChargePoint, EvGO, and others pick up those team members and work to make the other networks as good as the Tesla network has been). Overall, that could be a REALLY good thing for EV's.

Clearly you've never made the trip in a Chevy Bolt which maxes out at 50kW.

Friend just bought a tesla model 3 performance. It can't make it to Richmond and back from Norfolk without recharging. It's a 200 mile round trip. $20 to recharge it to 80%, which takes almost an hour.

$587/mo insurance. Mid 40s, clean driving record, no points, no accidents. Nearly 4x what they were paying. This isn't Tesla's insurance though. Tesla's insurance constantly looks at driving habits. Every time the app is opened, it's a different premium and it's no cheaper. Best we can tell is it updates every 15 minutes.

There's interior cameras that continuously monitors occupants.

It records and uploads camera, audio and location data.

Lives in an apartment, which charges extra for the garage with chargers. The chargers are level 2. Residents are limited to 2 hours per day. If multiple cars are charging, they all drop to level 1 charging. There's always multiple cars charging. This seems to be how most apartments around here are handling EVs.

Here’s a nice piece, maybe off topic maybe not. Maybe already covered maybe not.

And a cool 80s video accompaniment.

No, but they can beat grandma in her minivan from stoplight to stoplight - while being careful not to go more than 10 mph over the speed limit.

Isn't that the truth? Is it because they're all on economy runs? I was trying to cruise at 55 mph in a 50 earlier, and a dickwad in a model S was going the exact speed limit, so my Silverado 1/2 ton sped past this asshole..........and a line of traffic a mile long behind this idiot.

I think it is. Any way to tell from just looking? The first order was to be picked up in NC, but he thought it was going to be a hassle with state taxes. When he called to get it changed to Norfolk, they had to cancel the order and resubmit. They gave him a different VIN and there was a $4k increase. They told him it was because it was the newest model.

Oh, I also forgot the car will ban you from certain features if you do something it/they (telsa) doesn't like. He somehow got banned from using tesla superchargers - no idea how that happened or what he had to do to get his privilege back. It also banned him from using self-driving for a while.

Salvage-titled teslas are permanently banned from using tesla charging stations.

That got to be $587 for 6 months. I pay $280 for my 1020 HP Model X Plaid and my wife's BMW i3 combined with $500 deductible.

What you pay where you live has zero to do with what we pay where we live.

I understand that there are regional differences but I have a hard time believing that the difference is that much. Has he ever gotten a quote from State Farm? I know that if I'd go with Progressive, I would double my premium but with State Farm it's much cheaper.

Here is another myth busted about EV batteries..
Since 2011, only 1.5% of EVs or Hybrids needed a battery replacement.

It would have been nice if they said how many are still on the road and calculate the percentage that way instead of using the number sold. Most people have no understanding of statistics and how easily they can be manipulated to mislead people.
