Remember that one, do you?

Then you'll also remember the New Madrid quakes of 1811 and 1812. A repeat if those will cause far more widespread damage than the San Andreas.

We lived in the St Louis area from 2002 till 2017. That’s when I learned about the New Madrid Fault. If that one let’s go, it’s going to be a level of catastrophe this country hasn’t seen before. It may not happen for another thousand years or it may happen next week.

That's a really dumb comparison.

First, I can choose not to live in earthquake-prone California. I don't have much choice about living on the Earth.

Second is the relative likelihood of such events.

USGS estimates the likelihood of an M8 event in the next 30 years at 30%. The Cascadia event, M9+, that I referred to earlier is on an approximate 500 year cycle. I'll leave it up to a statistician to estimate the likelihood of the latter in any given year.

These percentages are orders of magnitude higher than predictions for a world-killer asteroid.

Sisters' phones (Ft. Myers) are now operational. They are in a newbie panic. Asked me to buy two generators and haul them down there. I pointed out that a portion of I75 is closed down, rivers have not yet crested, and the supply of gas along the route is unknown. I'd talk to Walter (Cape Coral since 1970) for advice.

Walter agreed with me that would be dumb. He evacuated to GA well ahead of Ian and is still there. Will maybe drive down with a trailer full of care packages late next week at the earliest.

Told my sisters to get in Dad's car and drive up here. This will be a long term rebuild for them, and they can do that remotely just as well as they can living with limited electricity.

Two hours later one called back, just purchased three generators.

Funny, I lived in the SF Bay Area from 1961 to 2003. The 1989 quake collapsed the Cypress structure freeway, dropped a section of the Bay Bridge, and destroyed many buildings and killed people. Dad's house in Oakland suffered quite a bit of plaster damage . Many other smaller quakes before and since in the Bay Area, but the '89 quake is not easily forgotten. Guess you lived in a different Bay Area.Name: OIP (13).jpg

So... Do people really not know to NOT run generators inside a building?
One dead in NC from it, his neighbors carbon monoxide alarm was going off as he also had gen running inside a closed garage. What is stupid contagious? I mean WTF....
Every time a hurricane hits seems more than one dies from it, and during hard winters.
Hell I put mine downwind when it's running as don't like the fumes.

I used to drive 880 every day when My ship was in Alameda. When I heard it collapsed at that time of day, figured 10K were dead. World Series saved a bunch of people that day.

Pictures of the quake damage to your house from the Loma Prieta quake?

I was in Post Grad school in Monterey for that one, we were without power for 3 days from that one - but little other damage. It was a bad one.

Time will tell.
Will be interesting to see what I come home to.
I fly into SAV and rented an F 150.

Neighbor says our roof looks excellent.
But, that we also had 1.5-2' of water in the house.

I feel like we dodged a huge bullet being 2 miles from ground zero AND on the water.

Need me to pick anything up in Jawja, let me know.
