Hey Laurie...I signed off last night before you posted about going on to a doctoral program. Do you have some work experience already? I think you said you did?
HI Liz

Here's the post I left for you:
Well, while I have Dr. Comstock pushing me too, I have the professor who is a tax attorney pushing me to sit for the CPA. I'm leaning towards taking the Becker review, sitting for the exam get some work experience. Then go back for my doctorate.

Right now, I'm one of six managers of the university's investment fund, and I just finished up the financial information for our Annual report. We did very well...
benchmarks:
S&P 500-had a 12.8% return with a std deviation of 5.05
Russell 3000- had a 16.9% return std deviation of 5.16
Pacer investment Fund-17.98% return w/ std deviation of 3.52

The fund's annual return (unrealized gain/loss + dividend income/ cost basis) was 18.1%

So I'm doing some accounting, some investing, some managing of a fund but I think it would better if I got the CPA out of the way for now. Take a break from school for a yr or 2 then go back.

Did taxes for 4 yrs, have done the financial information for the annual report, weekly NAV, and quarterly reports.for 2 yrs

How is everyone tonight?

I'd say study for the CPA exam and get it behind you. Hopefully your former employer will sign off on your tax experience and you can get your license without more experience, and just go directly on to doctoral school.

Just be aware that it's the biggest hazing process this side of what fraternities did in the past.

Thanks for the advice, I'll keep that in mind
PA requires 150 credit hours and 1 yr work I think? Maybe 2 yrs.
I graduated undergrad with 156, grad will an additional 48. So its a matter of passing the test and work experience.

Some states allow work experience gained prior to passing the exam if you worked under a CPA's supervision. Do you know if PA does? That's what I was advising, that if they do allow that, ask your employer for when you did taxes to sign off for you. This won't work, though, if you weren't supervised (somewhere up the line) by a CPA.

I worked under an EA but the owner of the company was a CPA...so I'll have to check into that!
Thanks for the insight
