We wanted to save the original gear. It really wasn't that hard to do* after figuring out how to get the desired result.

* It does require a skilled machinist to hold tight tolerances plus machinery that allows the operator to get the fit required.

While you’ve got the gear off did you consider making a cast of it and making a spare gear just to have in case this one crumbles into pieces?

I am jealous of the talent/time/effort/knowledge of the guys that can DO stuff like the above, and here I am with just a drill press.....

I remember taking my kids to see a Pennsylvania farm festival ....I think York Pa.....IF memory serves......and seeing a lot of that old equipment running.....

Kind of living witness about the adage 'You gotta start somewhere'......

I can't believe all those folks just casually standing next to tons of old spinning iron and steel.

Easy to see why so many were lost as we advanced in technology. Any one of those would tear you up if you got lazy and careless.

I did document the specs on the gear just in case. Where the tooth broke and was originally repaired was where there was a casting defect ( porosity ). When Bill Hazzard did the machining to the gear, he was able to cut deep enough to get to good metal. It should last for many, many decades.

Also, Roger wanted to keep the engine as original as possible since there are literally less than a handful of that size and configuration left.
