I'll be looking forward to pics of the new paint job. PPG does make good paint. Remember even strokes *that's what she said* not the sway in/out stuff most noobs do. Scott

I tried sand blasting ONCE. That was enough for me. I had on work coveralls over my regular clothes and was covered from head to toe. After sand blasting I forgot that my wallet was still in my regular clothes. For months afterwards when I would pull out a credit card, etc...there was STILL sand in every crevice of that wallet. Blasting is huge mess. Sanding is bad enough, blasting is ridiculous Quote:
His post on how to time/tune ignition and carbs were the best on the internet. All those guys in the C1/C2 section in the old days were professors on old cars. |

We have perfect weather here for painting outside of a booth. Low humid., moderate temps, no wind. It doesn't look like a lot of work, but surface prep is were all the labor is involved in painting. I left the dings of hauling fire wood for 44 yrs., also I didn't fill all the ones in the replacement tail gate. I'm happy with my $25 paint gun from Walmart. At that price, you can basically use them and toss them and buy a new one next time.
My biggest regret is not chemically stripping the tail gate. I had planned to only scuff it and paint it. I wasted too much time sanding it down to bare metal with a sandpaper. I should have used the tried and true Aircraft Paint stripper remover and gone straight to metal from the start. I hope to put the single stage color on this week, before the humid. hits 90 plus again in GA. |

Well the color match wasn't to my liking. I should have stopped and went back to the supplier and let them adjust it. They used their fancy camera and mixed it up by what it told them. I went back to them last week and they mixed up a fresh custom batch matched to the truck by their human eye. It was add a little of this and add a little of that and lots of back forth from the truck to the mixing area. They gave me the new batch free of charge! And it's not like I'm a frequent customer or it was a large order. The only drawback was scuffing it all up in 105 deg. heat index. I'm waiting for a morning or late afternoon to spray the new paint.
It was still giving me a hard start situation and a couple other quirks the last couple of weeks. This week I started smelling fresh gas....popped the hood and fuel was leaking from the fuel pump. Got it off and it looks like the original pump. I wrestled a new one on. That little rod that slithers up/down on the lever is always a beotch! Plus there is some kind of bracket on this motor just in front of the pump. I finally got it held up in place long enough with a hacksaw blade to get the pump in and the bolts started. I might as well rebuild the carb. at some point and that will be a complete fuel system repair. |

I decided to rebuild the carb. so that I know that I have been through the entire fuel system.
I should have gone to the parts store and walked out with a rebuild kit...or one of the specialty sites - quadrajetparts or Mike's carbs. Lesson learned. I've rebuilt several Holley's, this will be my first Roch. 2gc |

I found the build sheet! That gives me all the documentation for the truck. Orig. invoice, build sheet, glove comp. stuff, etc...

Once you get the carb dialed in, flip the air cleaner lid and take a spirited ride... it will trigger memories I promise.

I have the carb blown apart now. I need to do a bit more cleaning on it and run a wire or something through all the holes. I have a compressor to blow them out. I've always heard you STILL have to run a wire through them? I wound up with a Walker rebuild kit...hope it is good. I hope I still have my pressure gauge for tuning and I've thought about leaving the emission crap off of it?

Cutting torch files work really well for cleaning all the little carb orifices
