You're a moron if you think that you can bullshit everyone into thinking that you're not smart or efficient enough to operate with 5 monitors or even less.
Total overkill, because you can.
Hell, my BIL was in a hedge fund and didn't use more than 5. My BIL made way more bloody money than you ever will, and still does. With 5 !
Hey... Whatever blows your hair back......
Jeff, as you have offended several people here recently over your replies, you just offended me, and we go WAY back. I never get offended, but you just crossed the line. Yes your kid is smart, NO YOUR KID is not in tech. You are talking out of your ass and you can kiss mine. You have no clue of what you say.

I have my opinion, which is valid though.

I'm perfectly happy to agree to disagree and leave it at that. We make our living having this tech at our disposal and always will have it. I have the bank to make it happen, and it's contributed to GWiz being as stellar as she is compared to her peers.

Stock market people don't have the need to handle what GWiz and I deal with on a daily basis. Max a stock dude should need is 6 or 8. We live in a completely different universe. We program and build shit, not look at moving charts. I have 100 copies of notepad open on any given day.

Ya, just my misguided opinion again.
Ya, I do piss people off, but sometimes there is another way to look at things.
I'm not always right, but I sometime am.
You refer to Snake's threads.
I'm not wrong with my suggestions to him. It's just the hard facts that need to be brought out. I don't candy coat things.
How I got this far in life starting with less than $0 is beyond me.
If I had tact, I'd be dangerous.

Dude, you and I are the same. I tell it like it is and it sucks to be like that in corporate. I'm constantly cleaning up after my frank remarks.

At the end of the day, ACTIONS speak louder than words, and THAT is who GWiz and I are. WE FUCKING deliver. Everyone else just talks. We need the tools that help us deliver.

Yep.
I put my money where my mouth is and they fear losing me at work because I deliver. They take the good with the bad, (tactless frank me).
At least, that's what I like to think.

I think we are done with this discussion, but I'm still called to the carpet over stupid ass'ed bullshit that I said. You say I'm your number 1 biller in the world, but you want some millennial to have input on my employment status? There will always be talkers and always be doers. The successful companies will side with the doers. I fucking hate having to be PC and watch what I say.

Amen brother.
For shitz & giggles, I texted my buddy, who is a lead engineering manger for an engineering firm that produces gears for huge windmills, and gears for other applications.
I asked him what the highest number of monitors that any one of his engineers uses at their desk.
He said typically 2, some have three.
Gear production is one of the most difficult and technical things that an engineer can come across.
Just wondering.
Ya, your gig is not comparable, but G's might be.
I got nuttin' else.

Corporate doesn't buy that kind of setup. (Hell, my laptop from my massive employer SUCKS..hence I spent $8,000 on the correct one with my own money) Send him a picture of both of ours. Corporate would NEVER buy 8 or 18. We do it because we can and because we can afford it. And GWiz is insanely beyond her peers in her development. The fact that she can't live with 4 illustrates that fact. If you don't walk a mile in our shoes, you have no clue what it's like to be like us and why we are so successful.

Just because they don't...doesn't mean they wouldn't benefit from it. The right person makes all the difference.

well, i just can't fathom what to do with more than one.

guess i'm the local luddite.

i made a deliberate decision back in college that i didn't want to sit in front of a computer screen all day doing programming (FORTRAN back then, but i'm sure i could have learned other languages, my roommate was working in C and C+ then). and i had to hike across campus to the computer lab to log in and do stuffs. spent a few long nights perfecting projects. enough of that.

there is more to life than money and career success.

Another anecdote...GWiz just finished with a HUGE ENGINEERING firm and they have no clue who she is or why she does what she does. They were all blown away by her dorm setup. Again, corporate would never provide that setup, but at the same time, her boss' boss said there could never been another intern, cuz they can't exceed what GWiz did. They love her to death. She's off that charts in what she did, cuz she brings her own shit to work to do her job.

At my previous job I was programming CNC milling machines and CNC lathes. Two monitors , one for the print and the other for actual program.

The reason two (or three as the case with your buddy ) monitors are used is that the program they are using to write what they need is already written and they are putting in values for what they need.

The gear profiles are in the software. If they try to put two or more gears too close or too far apart, they will get an error message. The software also will check loads, stresses and other important values.

The person putting values in has to "have a clue" to design a good item.

Craig, your gear buddy and the investor are all different in what info they need to have on hand.

Since I'm retired, I have income to meet my basic needs and live relatively comfortably. The volunteer work I do at the hospital (an industry I never aspired to) is more satisfying than just about any other work I've ever done and I am paid absolutely nothing for it except a free lunch in the cafeteria.

Forgot to mention I get up at 4:00 am to do it two days a week. You could have never made me believe I would do this five years ago.

In case anyone cares, I have four monitors. Two for Windows, two for Linux. One of the Linux monitors is a 15" laptop. The rest are 24" to 30". If I did several virtual machines, which I sometimes do, having a couple more would be handy. Also you can keep your email hidden most of the time, it's a time sucker to have it in a dedicated window where you are constantly seeing stuff come in. Once you train your employer to not expect you to answer email immediately (they don't, ever notice?) you can sorta regain a bit of your humanity.
