Quick update! I’ve been buried under the weight of my own imagination so progress is slow but steady.
Had to sand off first finish attempt due to my sloppy sanding. That gold color shows every flaw! I still have a little filling work but it should be seamless. First was several coats of vinyl sealer. Then color coat. Then a couple coats of clear. Next I filled the star detail thing with black epoxy to bring it flush like an inlay. I believe it will sand and polish nicely. Once the epoxy has cured, I’ll be laying on about ten more coats of clear, sanding between each. Then, wet sand and polish. |

You're almost golden now (pun intended). Flat sand until the inlay is clearly delineated with no white outline. Blend the curve on the body in and I recommend a tiny fineline tape line on the edge of the epoxy... either natural wood or a contrasting (silver?) stripe around so there is a definite break between the inlay and the body. Seal, color and clear; Bob's your uncle.

Another set back. Got some cracking where I put color over clear. Just on one isolated area. Should be able to fix but weird as hell. Will post pic tomorrow. At first I thought they were scratches showing up. But soon it was clear it is fracturing. Real organic lacquer is some weird shit. With poly that would have been zero issue. I’m going for fifties Les Paul Good Top finish.
