New Sharpshooters In Family
For the first time ever, took my 14 yo twin grand girls to the range today. I was a little leary because they're both cutups, laughing it up and doing goofy stuff. So I gave a safety class at home and familiarized them with the weapon.
Once we got to the range, signed off on the waivers, they were all business and wide-eyed. Used my .22 cal Henry repeater, the smallest rifle I had they could handle comfortable. Going into the unknown here, set the target at 21', not long for a rifle, but that's what I felt comfortable with for a first time shoot. After each shot 20 rounds for center target and 10 rounds for head shots, I was surprised, Targets are small, about 16x24, one hit 26/30, the other hit 29/30. Not wanting to label either one, I just told them they were both sharpshooters. Son was working, asked if the girls liked it, I said yes. You'll be going to the range now, you can do the handguns.

I too took my kids to a gun range, or maybe just out in the country, maybe both, what I remember most is teaching them how to shoot, and so it was just a couple of times, being as the ex had custody and I had every other weekend.....typical.....
Some time later I saw a pix of my daughter with what looked like an AR at a range......VERY surprised and pleased..... |

Good on you, Norm. Looks like you covered all the safety bases!
I'm always hyper alert when I take young new shooters to the range. You opened a door for those girls, if they choose to go through it, to explore a new avenue of discipline and accomplishments. Like you said, it's up to their dad to follow through now. |

My son is deputy CO in a high speed unit now, long hours and tons of training, so I help out when I can. He's been wanting to take the girls, but he thought they were still a little immature. It may be different now.

Well done Norm and the two young ladies did very well for their first time shooting.
Very smart move having the targets close. That is a BIG confidence builder Jeff |

Good on you for introducing young people to the shooting sports. I did the same with my nieces and nephews awhile back and all enjoyed the experiences but none are active shooters today. Hunting, fishing and recreational shooting are dying pastimes... I try and encourage anyone with an interest at all.

Nice ! I look forward to seeing their first results with the handguns.
My girls were 18 and 16 and took to them better than I did. What range did you go to Norm ? |

Good job!
This come from a former long time NRA firearms instructor. I worked a lot with Cub and Boy scouts so I know what its like to be the "door opener'' so to speak. |

I didn't break down their scores and tell them, you know how kids are...."I did better than you, neener neener" stuff.

When I was shooting NRA High Power, two brothers and their families would shoot.
The younger brother would show up with his two sons and the one daughter. She was about 14 and shot quite well. ( nice young lady too) During any match, it was toss up on whether she would have high score ( out of the family) or her two brothers or Dad. They all had their own "home built" AR-15. One week she showed up and her AR was all decorated up in pink furniture and "Hello Kitty" stickers. I asked her what was up with that. She said while giving her brothers the "evil eye" , "It's the only way I can keep them from shooting MY AR" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I used to help teach the new pistol shooters at my gun club. The women were much easier to teach as they would actually listen to what you said. It seems the "sticks and berries" created a "I already know everything" attitude when they didn't have a clue. |

Looking good Grandpa
Really nice to see the next generation involved in guns as a part of their birth right. My daughter, now 16 has been shooting since she was 10. Started with a BB gun and stepped up to a .22 She is 4-5 without a scope on milk jugs from ~40' Scott
