Thats one reason why I left that credit union, and went to Navy Federal.
Well, I guess it depends on your bank. I bought a plasma TV a few years ago, and they wouldn't let it go through but I talked to them right there on the spot and approved it.

It's a double edge sword, the protection is good, but not when it stops you.

You should be happy they cancelled your card when you attempted a third gas charge. I'd guess 90+% of people that attempt a third consecutive gas charge are using a stolen card.

Gas stations are one of the first places thieves go to use a stolen card because they don't have to deal with a person and they just leave if it doesn't work.

Your situation is a very rare exception.

what always worries me is, if you are in a situation like, the phones are down, or the comm system the CC scanners use, is down...be it a gas station, grocery store, whatever..if you dont have cash, you aint transactin'.

When Ivan came through in 04, CC machines were paperweights for about 2 weeks afterwards, people would limp to the stations to pump gas for generators, saws, etc..and of course...no way to pay, as their small cash reserves had dried up.

Cash, is the universal currency, there should never be an instance in the USA when legal tender is not accepted. When cards dont work, when checks arent trusted...cash has got your back.

That's the point.

I had a card compromised one time when I noticed pizza purchases that were frequent, like every day or two. I thought it was the S/O but neither of us normally went to that particular brand. Now it wasn't enough to trigger cut off, but I went to the bank and said these weren't me and they refunded it with pretty much no questions asked. Not so bad.

When I told them to not do that to my account, and it happened again 2 weeks later, except I bought gas 2 times, and then that same day tried to make an online special order for a customers parts...and the transaction was declined, i left the bank the next morning, withdrew all money, shut down accounts, went to navy federal, much better banking experience so far.

No one said you can't keep some cash in your wallet along with your cards.

WRONG! I pay most of the time with a credit card that pays bonus money at Walmart. I guess I get about 20$ a month at Wallyworld a month for FREE. No fees, and I pay the balance off each month, so NO INTEREST, which I'm sure pisses them off to no end.

CC. I get 1% cash back on everything. Each quarter I get 5% back on something. This quarter it is gas. One quarter it will be groceries. The other 2 quarters I dont remember so its probably something I dont use much. It all adds up and I pay it off monthly so I have no interest or fees.

Due to the money back/incentives I use the credit card the whole way. Always paid off at the end of the month. Always.

Rarely cash.

Credit cards are not evil, unless you are irresponsible. I have never carried a balance on a credit card until recently...I have a card that is 0% for 18 months. I plan on riding that till the very last day. I have the cash to pay it off now, but it's borrowing money for free..,so why not?

I do not pay any fees for my credit cards, and I have checked.

Incorrect. I was raised to not spend money I don't have. Unless it's an emergency, there isn't a credit card on the planet that can make me take it out of my wallet. In fact, I stopped carrying my CC's because I never used them.

As far as I'm concerned, debit, cash and checks are all the same to me. In keeping with the above theme, I am the type of person who likes to pay for something only once. I use my debit card almost exclusively. The only time I use my credit cards is on a rare occasion that I don't want to go into my available cash for some reason, and the bill is usually paid in full at month's end. I don't fly much and I have never had much use for CC companies incentive programs.
