Sell low buy high? Sounds like a great strategy!

A couple of weeks ago, a family member called my wife and I in a panic because her portfolio was "down more than 30%". At that time, the S&P was down about 7% from its all time high, so I pointed that out, and said "what the hell are you invested in?". It didn't go well.

Yes, she is a liberal.

What helps me cope is to calculate what my 401k would be at if it was at the all time high, so current quantity x ath. I sleep okay knowing it will get back there before I retire.

Full disclosure.
I took profits and went full cash when I said gidee-up
Basically at today's top.
That being said, I'm ecstatic with my profit but the Naz is still 2200 below it's all time high...However the current political uncertainty can go either way, so I bailed.
Crazy times !

I am down about 4k in my 401k since Trump not really worried. Owner deposits a varying amount once a year based on profit and hours worked but it has consistently went down in 20 years and is resting at about 5k a year but was higher early on. I contribute Bi-Monthly a fixed amount. My retirement age is 67 and I am 56 now. I lost about 50k in a divorce and am currently sitting around 200k. I roughly have around 2k more than I really need a month and it looks like I could max out my 401k through work that is based on a age related forecast, I do not control it but can if I choose. I am wondering if I should invest more in this plan or get into a Roth 401k, and what one should I max out. I'm no baller but I would like to make that extra money work best for me. Any advice?

You have an 11 year investment horizon and so that is relatively long term...

I would rock the ROTH to the max and be fairly aggressive.... I wouldn't depend solely on some 401K that "I can't control". If your company matches contributions then I would go at least that amount in their plan if you can manage both. If the company's contribution has gone consistently down for 20 years be very cautious...make sure YOU track the plan's performance yourself.

With over a decade to go you should be aggressive, but that can get bumpy, but will yield the highest returns. But not to the point you can't sleep at night.

Don't try to time the market, most of the yokels that do cite the gains but not the losses (and there are a few on this forum), and it almost never works for Joe six-pack...

Educate yourself on 'the rule of 72"; its a simple formula to determine how much of that extra $2K you need to invest at what interest rate to reach your goal at age 67.

DISCLAIMER: I am NOT an investment advisor....my advice is my opinion!

I have generally found that when I know numbers like what the market has done year to date, and the one year return off the top of my head, the pretenders DO NOT want to have a fact based discussion, and turn to insults instead. That's basically what happened in this case. I never got ANY kind of information about what she was invested in, or how she calculated a 30% loss etc.

My 77% bond retirement portfolio is up YTD 1.39%. Not that I really care, as it pumps out the same monthly income despite asset prices.

SPY, as of yesterday, is down 4.27% YTD.

These freaking kids online though (mostly Reddit) are losing it.

"Trump is destroying the economy!"

"Why is that dictator allowed to wreck everything?"

"Will we ever recover from this? I have to retire in 45 years!"

I've responded with such things as:

Stocks were overvalued, this is a needed correction and will restore health. So far, it's a pretty mild correction.

Stocks don't always go up.

Wait until you get a 56% drop as happened in 2008 - '09. And during the Great Depression, stocks bottomed out at minus 90%.

------------------------------------------------------
Reddit, being retarded as it is, never slapped my hand, spanked, me, or removed any of my posts for "disinformation" or whatever. Color me surprised.

I was down a little over $100k for a short while, now only down about $40k, some of that from monthly withdrawals. At this point, still have more than I started with, still have more than a year ago.

Actually most of the ones I follow are from the Boglehead cult, and according to cult rules they are told to just sit tight (which is what I've always done, even before "Bogleheadism" was invented).

A lot of them are ready to bail out, although I've not seen many comments like that in the past few days since there's been (maybe) a bottom reached.

I had a family member that posted on fb late on election night 2016, when Trump was leading...that the world was going to end and he was going to lose all his investments and should have sold everything!!!1
IIRC, futures were down like 5%
I told him to calm down and everything would be ok.
He gave me some pissy reply and I told him he was old enough that he shouldn't have most of his money in volatile investments.

A couple days later I bumped his post, saying "aren't you glad you didn't sell everything?"

he unfriended me.

I track our retirement accounts in excel every week.
I consider us very middle-class, and we lost $60k+ in one week in April.
I changed nothing.

Our balances are higher than they were when Trump won in November.
Still down from our high in mid February though.
