A sonar expert has revealed that detected "banging noises" heard at the search site for the missing submarine could be "wishful thinking."

Jeff Karson, Professor Emeritus of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Syracuse University, told DailyMail.com that the sounds heard could likely be "debris" and "junk."

"One possibility is that the sounds bouncing around the debris. And so it's a more complicated echo," Karson explained.

"It's just not bouncing off of one thing. It's bouncing off a bunch of things. And it's like, you know, dropping up a marble into a tin can. It's rattling around and that would confuse the location.

"The banging, I hear the Coast Guard talk about it. I wonder how much of this is just wishful thinking?

The loudest place I ever took a submarine through was near ice.. I was on 640 class boomers and 688i as well as a few other types as a rider.
You would be surprised the sounds you hear in the ocean, and none of them will make sense.. Speed of sound is 4 times faster basically, and temp, pressure and salinity play a big part in how far sounds travel.. We can hear things real far, without getting into details.
And Sonbuoys suck.. They dont work well.
What they need now is Triest 2 to be brought back and dive to find the titantic submersible wreckage. Its a wreck, they are dead.. Its sad, but is the truth.

Yes, I remember the track balls, CRTs, and a bunch of old school stuff we had. But, to say we are driving boats around with stuff like this isnt true.. It may look the same, but we all know the Navy. They will put their NAVSEA engineers to it and make it work in the most adverse conditions and put 2 ground wires in it, sound silence it, and almost Sailor proof it.
