But how? We were at their tender mercies. Cell phones existed on in our fevered Star Trek fantasies. Even if we somehow managed to get our parent's attention, convincing them to come and get us would be virtually impossible.

Sarcasm, something that gets lost online at times.

I have had my own misadventures with camping such as my tent with myself in it washing down a side of a mountain from torrent rain.
Climbing Tuckerman's Ravine and upon reaching the top nearly get killed in the fog by a car that was too close to the edge.Saco river rapids soaking all of our food...

Don't even get me started on my various canoeing adventures.

Then there was that time we were trying to get the campsite at the lake set up, and it was raining so hard we were cowering under a pavilion shelter. Meanwhile my buddy's bass boat filled up with enough water to overcome his Ford pickup's e-brake and, while in gear, began moving down towards the lake. I ran over to it and tried to open the door, it was locked. By the time he got over there with the keys it was moving too fast. We just watched in horror as it headed to the lake. Then, at the last second, it hit a small rock or stump and veered a bit to the left, hitting a large tree dead center on the bumper. Amazing, nothing was really hurt. The rest of the time he had that truck it had a perfectly symmetrically bent front bumper.

I hope people have snow survival kits in their cars. I kept one for decades when I had long commutes to work in cold country.

It's 55 now and sunny. Freeze alert is out. It may hit 30 for 10-12 hours overnight. people are freaking out. They can't find long socks.

It's suppose to be near 80 by Sunday.

Well my radar is piqued for tonight.
I'll be up at different intervals making sure that the boiler is running as it should and just doing general checks on the place.
-18° is serious stuff, and I'm not taking it lightly.
Thank God I'm out of the rental business... This is nightmare time for landlords...

-4 this morning on the way to work. Got up to a whopping 7 today. Set a statewide record for the lowest high temp. in a day. The old record was 8.
Wind here made for -15 to -25 wind chill all day. But hey, it was sunny.

Tomorrow morning is supposed to bring -9 with wind chills of around -35. Highs in the low double digits. Then the wind goes away and its more snow for the weekend. Numbers are all over the place on that. I read between 2 to 10 inches, depending on which idiot weather blurb you read.

Next week looks no better temperature wise. Please God. Make it end.

I feel for all of you up North dealing with the crazy arctic cold! I really do! No fun when it's that cold! I just ordered some new long johns for work. Sucks working in the cold temps. Up there I'm sure wearing layers just are not enough!

Like Jeff was saying. When it gets this cold you take extra precautions. We saw -15 a couple times last year and more wind than now. That kinda temps will kill you quick if exposed to it.

That's one of many reasons I have a generator that can run half the stuff in the house and enough kerosene heaters and fuel to keep from freezing to death if all that fails. I can also always shut off the water and blow the lines out, shut down everything and bug out if necessary. By snowmobile if need be.
