My accountant got me into raising Black Angus 24 years ago. Been through some trials and tribulations with slaughterhouses, but things finally worked themselves out. Tried Black Baldies for a while back in '05 or '06, but found them too wild for our liking. Couldn't tame them. Phased them out. |

Here's one Black Baldie that we tamed. Bull calf born on the 4th of July that we named Indy. This is the neighbor's kid. She halter broke him and would ride him around. I traded him to the President of the local town council for a gooseneck stock trailer and John used Indy as a bull for about five years before he (the bull) was struck by lighting and killed.

If you look closely, some of the cattle have yellow ear tags. I'll never forget #43. Cow learned how to bust fence. Finally, an old timer told me to get rid of her before she taught all the cattle to do it. We put her in the freezer.

I did not grow up on a farm, it weirded me out a little bit. Riding shotgun with a calf in the middle of the front seat of a pickup was new to me as well. "hold his tail down" |

I don't doubt it. I roomed with a guy in college for a while whose family owned and ran a beef cattle farm. Being interested in meat, we talked a lot about what his family did, it was really pretty interesting. Sometimes, he would bring to school some meat from his farm that was raised without drugs or steroids or anything like that, just corn fed. Delicious. He knew all kinds of breeds, and what they were good for, like milk or beef. I never once heard him talk about "Angus" beef. Until the pandemic, I still had lunch with him once or twice a year, I'll have to re-connect and try to remember to ask him what, exactly, is "Certified Angus Beef".

Probably grass fed and corn finished. As are most cattle processed in the US. You don't have to corn finish them, but if you do not you end up with what is sometimes called "Australian beef". I have also heard that not all beef in England is corn finished. "Finishing" the animal for the last five or six weeks on a dry lot with nothing but corn to eat, flushes the grass toxins out of the flesh and marbles the meat. It also changes the color of the fat from yellow to more of a white color. We always corn for six weeks. Angus is indeed a breed all to its own. It has a thick, muscular body that is ideal for meat production. They are also naturally polled. Meaning they do not have horns. I have always found them to be relatively tame and easy to raise. Around here, 95% of the farmers raise Angus. Edited to add: One year I borrowed a Tarentaise bull to put on my herd. A very large, red bull of French origins. His name was Tuff and he was as tame as a kitten. My buddy's girlfriend ended up bringing him out to my farm and when I asked her if she wanted to drive the trailer into the field to release him, she said that would not be necessary. She opened the trailer door and led him out on a halter. When I remarked at just how tame Tuff was, she replied, "If you had his job, you would be plenty tame too". Pretty little blonde thing with the bluest eyes you ever saw. My buddy keeps four or five bulls and they seldom spend any time on his farm. They are always out on loan. That way, you can keep fresh blood in your herd. Anyway, Tuff's kids were all born reddish black, but faded to pure black as they got older. |

lol how do you really feel?
On an aside, was going to do today's article on shoddy mechanics, but after a quick response email from them finding my parts, I'm going to put that one on hold (although it was not going to call out this specific shop). So today's article is on street racing, came out nice. https://www.corvsport.com/street-rac...till-doing-it/ |

Something happened and Eldon was rejected by the mother and they bottle raised it from the beginning. I am glad I was not part of that. They stopped raising pigs shortly before I started dating my wife. To this day, my FIL hates pigs. |
