Your money and your project. But I’d be dammed if I’d build a garage/ shop and not have more space than that. You know how it goes, once you add all the tools and equipment the place shrinks.

Again, seems crazy to spend that money on an apartment just to rent out when for less money you could have an awesome garage/ shop. Who wants some stranger above you who is going to complain about the noise. And who wants a tenant above their shop making their own noise. And this person coming and going on the property. No thank you.

I built a 24x26 two car with flat 10’ ceiling height that’s only going to house my wife’s car and a few other things…I probably should have gone a little bigger.
I built a 30x60 pole barn with 12’ eave height and vaulted steel trusses, that I’ll wall up and make my shop…I probably should have gone bigger and taller.

Build yourself a sweet one story garage with real cool architecture that blends nicely with your house and environment. Make it as large as possible without being obnoxious. Give yourself plenty of room. Plenty of floor space.
You will thank yourself for it.
Not to mention if you don't close the sub-lease loophole and then your tenant has Charles Manson living in there...

I would have gone higher than 10' on a garage ceiling, you never know when you want a lift installed....my lift barely fits in my 10'4" height garage.

Agree. Most tenants suck. And I wouldn’t want one above my shop.
Quick story:
I had a home and shop and MIL cottage on two subdivision lots down near the beach. Three separate one story buildings.
When MIL passed my wife was animate about not renting out the cottage. Nearly 10 years ago and it was worth 2 grand a month. Today probably more.
So, we sold and moved on.

On the garage ceiling height at the new house, it will never have a car lift in there. I’ve never had one and probably never will. If I did it would go in the shop. Plenty of height there.

Having a lift is one thing. Having one that goes up a full 6 feet plus is key if you actually want to work under the car without hunching over double. I had my ceilings raised to 14' so I could actually work on cars.

Not a fan of the 1980's dated triangle end-windows that Yadkin seems stuck on. Makes the place look instantly dated, and not in a classic way. Stick to square windows, IMO, with nice casings.

Regarding garage ceiling height, a Benpack 4 post with ‘69 Mach1 and FGT; I have 10.5’ at center beam It works but even with a car only 41.5” high I still work underneath it from a chair. Egghead is shorter than me so maybe he can stand up

That's gay and you know it. Trying to get leverage on anything or yank an oil filter or a transmission or an exhaust system 'from a chair'-----lame.

Egghead is taller than me so I look up to him.

Instead of a range, I'm thinking of doing a built-in combo oven over a built-in two burner cooktop. I don't see an apartment dweller cooking a turkey. Am I wrong?

Depends. I personally do more stovetop stuff, often needing 4 burners simultaneously, and that's just for one or two people. I know people who never use a real oven, they use a countertop toaster oven. I also know people who only use a microwave. (I only use one to heat water). For size and economy, the combo unit might be an answer, if you install it in a way that upgrades to a more substantial unit could be made without complete tear-out later.

I thought I'd chime in.

I built two garages; one attached 24 x 36 x 12 and the other 100 ft away is 24 x 36 x 12.

You will need the head room for a good lift and tall cars.

Just passing on how good this has worked out for me since 1985.

I think that much overhang is ridiculous looking. And it will be expensive to build, especially up there with snow load considerations.

Man, you are hell bent on having that apartment. You have girlfriend you need to shack up?

40 years of continual use out of a home shop? WINNING!!!

Didn't he have a guy that wanted to swap service?

Still waiting for him to show how a (soupcan) can hold a ton and why a generator pad needs a slope.

I didn’t say it couldn’t be done.
I think it’s funny. You will spend a bundle on the apartment and “Bavarian architecture”….
And have an actual garage/ shop space where everything is bellybutton to asshole.

We know what’s going on here. Baby doll ain’t having a real man’s shop on her property next to their nice mountain subdivision home.
