I well remember the days (40-50 years ago) when this was just common knowledge everywhere, a "rule of the road," and nearly everyone did it.

I've never been there, but I've heard that this is strictly enforced on the Autobahn.

Around 1995 I was heading west on the NYS Southern Tier Xway in the middle of a weekday afternoon to bang a chick in Ohio. The Xway is all rural, rolling hills, woods, and farmland. There was no traffic.

A Schuler Potato Chip truck was in the left lane doing around the speed limit. I wanted to go faster and tailed him for a few miles but he WOULD NOT move right.

I finally got frustrated and, against my better judgement, passed him on the right. That was my first lesson in how rules of the road were being degraded.
