I believe it was a one-hit wonder for his group at the time, Derek and the Dominoes.

But it's Eric Clapton. (And Duane Allman among others) Interesting side sauce here. When it was released Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs was a flop. Part of the reason was nobody knew it was Clapton.

As far as I'm concerned it's his best work. Period.

Agreed. It's his best work. I'm sure you know the story of he song: Clapton was hopelessly in love with Patti Harrison, wife of George. Clapton was trying to lure her away from her husband, with whom he was good mates. That wasn’t widely known when the song appeared in 1970 on the Derek And The Dominos album "Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs", but it was certainly obvious to all concerned.

Layla was inspired by a book Clapton had been reading, The Story Of Layla And Majnun, the 12th-century tale of an Arabian princess whose father marries her off, leaving her true love in despair that turns to madness.

Clapton, at the time a heavy drug user, as was fellow Dererk and the Dominoes band-mate, Duane Allman, even serenaded Patti at her home; despite being inebriated and high, he never missed a note. She eventually married him in 1979, but they divorced in 1988.

Due to the circumstances of its composition, "Layla" is defined by two movements, each marked by a riff. The first movement, which was recorded in the key of D minor for choruses and C-sharp minor for verses,[23] is centred around the "signature riff", a guitar piece utilising hammer-ons, pull-offs, and power chords. The first section contains the overdub-heavy slide guitar solo, played by Allman. By placing his slide at points beyond the end of the fretboard, Allman was able to play notes at a higher pitch than could be played with standard technique.

The second movement, Jim Gordon's contribution, is commonly referred to as the "piano coda."[24] Originally played in C major, the tape speed of the coda was increased slightly during mixing. The resulting pitch is somewhere between C and C sharp. The piano interlude at the end of the song is augmented by an acoustic guitar, and is also the accompaniment to the outro-solo. The same melody is played on Allman's slide guitar, albeit one octave higher.

My take on EC -

Yardbirds; Started as the hired gun, passed the baton to Jeff Beck who nobody understood and still doesn't, who then passed the baton to Jimmy Page who broke up the Yardbirds and founded Led Zeppelin by ripping off other peoples music.

John Mayall; I suspect in order to fully appreciate this you had to experience it back when it happened. Twenty years later Clapton channels Joe Bonamassa and dons Armani, sans sunglasses. This was also the "Clapton is God" era. A claim my grade school principal, Sister Vincent would take issue with and would probably get you a ruler to the knuckles if you so much as mentioned it.

Cream; A bunch of mindless wankery played by a white guy with an afro. Cream was known for it's live concert improvisation sessions in which nobody was paying any attention to anyone else in the band. We've all heard this kinda thing before. It's called Jazz. All this nonsense did was send everyone to the concession stand in search of beer, weed, and tube top wearing sluts. .

Blind Faith; Six lousy songs with an album cover that would get you a visit from Chris Hansen these days. Jimmy Page however loved it. Wholly unremarkable effort. EC couldn't find his way home but thankfully found his way out of this band.

Delaney and Bonnie; See Blind Faith minus the creepy album cover and Steve Winwood.

Derek and the Dominoes; Clapton finds his mojo by bedding his friends wife, a marginally attractive beatnik chick with the morals of an alley cat. Worst friend ever. When people say they don't get EC, this is presented as evidence they should. At least as far as guitar playing is concerned. All you need is love.

Solo Clapton; Contemporary Adult Easy Listening. AKA; radio friendly -this'll buy me another Ferrari- music. Clapton rides on his celebrity for much of the next 20+ years.

Honorable Mention - Clapton Unplugged; EC manages to find a way to ruin "Layla." Suburban housewives from coast to coast swoon, the record flies off the shelf and spawns myriad imitations by musicians who's plugged in versions sucked to begin with.

When I heard the Disraeli Gears album, I thought Eric Clapton invented the blues. But I was 13 and playing Ventures songs in a garage band.

When I got my first FM radio, I turned it on to one of the first FM rock stations in the country and they were playing Albert King. That made Clapton sound rather superficial and began a life long appreciation of the early blues artists that continues today.

I must say that Crossroads on the Wheels of Fire album is some of the greatest live guitar soloing ever recorded.

I forgot all about this. And it actually is on the charts and topped at no 4 on February 9, 1974, so it counts.
In this video, Casey Kasem gives an introduction.

Anyone who has seen Quentin Tarantino’s 1992 film “Reservoir Dogs” will understand the inside joke about this song. Written as a parody, the folk rock group was actually surprised it struck gold and achieved commercial success (it sold over a million copies) since it was nothing more than a joke at first.

The first several times I heard this song, I thought it was by Paul MaCartney/Wings!

Can you name some others?
Interesting fact about this song: that's Gerry Rafferty singing but he wouldn't do the video. His writing partner Joe Egan lip synched the video.
