$90/week, summer of 97. Worked as a camp counselor in charge of the dining hall at a Cub Scout Camp. I swore off food service after that summer, and basically told the camp director that I would never do that type of work again. 60+ 6-10 year old kids 3X per day was absolute insanity.
I do have some good stories though. |

Not counting the inconsistent pay of the restaurant jobs I had from ages 15-18, I count the job I held when I was 18.
I made 8.50/hr as a lot attendant at a vw/audi/porsche dealer in 2004. I would have done that job for half that. Even though it was just in the lot, I got to drive some really nice cars and the service managers for all 3 makes were really nice and great to work for. |

I'm not surprised you didn't know. You rarely see anyone my age with their own car. I like being the young guy. I keep some of the older guys on their toes. I worked their car wash 2 summers later, too. I have pictures of myself in a friend's race car from when I was little, but I didn't really get into racing until the Porsche Rennsport Reunion in 2001...when I was 15. I'll have to scan those pictures and send them to you. edit: this post came across as extremely self-centered but whatever, I love to talk racing. |

My first job out of college paid $518.23/mo + $100/mo flight (i.e., hazardous duty) pay. They also gave quarters and rations allowances...best damn job I ever had...to this date.

When I was 11 my dad's employees made $2.00~$2.50 an hour. In 1987 before I joined the Marines I was making $240~$300 a week.

Worked for the local farmers hauling hay, and working tobacco fields for $3.00 an hour. 8-10 hours throwing 60-80lb bales of hay around really made you appreciate when the straw farmers called. That was like a vacation!
First "real" job was washing trucks at a Blue Beacon truck wash for $3.35 an hour, minimum wage, but you made bonus money after you washed so many trucks. Most weeks I averaged between 8-10 bucks an hour. Dam good money in '84 for a 16 yr. old kid. |

While as a kid I did a lot of odd jobs to make money (Snow shoveling, grass cutting, painting ETC) My first real job at age 16 was packing groceries at a large supermarket, the wage was $1.15 per hour and of course taxes and social security was taken out!

Age 16, 1996. Minimum wage of $4.75/hr at Sun Lighting. I left that job four years later at something like $10/hr to go work at Bombardier/LearJet.

Had a paper route when I was 12, kept it until I was 16, made about $150 bucks a month. Got a real job at 16 in a grocery store and made $3.35 an hour.

I remember one day I was hired with a few other neighbor kids to help unload several big semi-loads of black diamond watermelons. I worked all day, about 8 hours, with a 30 minute break for lunch (they gave us a peanut butter sammich, watermelon, and ice water), and at the end of the day we got paid. I made $18!!!!
That was the last day I did that. Took me two washings to get the watermelon juice and stank out of my clothes. I picked tomatoes for $1/hour when I was about 14. Washed windows for $1.50/hour then too. Whatever it took. I had all sorts of terrible-paying jobs back when I was young. |
