I was six feet tall and 185 pounds as a senior, and I was the 5th-heaviest and 3rd-tallest player on the team.

We played on a field with bad grass, dim lighting, and poorly-constructed concrete stands (home side) and ramshackle aluminum stands (visitors side).

Facilities like the ones pictures... they boggle my mind, the thought that people in a community might care THAT MUCH about high school sports.
40+ years ago in Texas that was my experience too. Now the school district just completed a state of the art athletics center that looks much like the pics Chef posted. BTW I was 6 ft and 185 and the second tallest and heaviest player on our team. The other guy was 6'-1" and 195, he got a full ride to SMU, as a tight end.

I can't speak as I've never had the food there. Barn Babe is one of the cafeteria folks (my son calls her the "Burrito Lady") so she might be able to say better. But he and his friends eat at school every day. Kids don't do that unless they like the food.

I can remember my high school chemistry teacher complaining about the number of chemicals he could buy with his budget, but there always seemed to be enough money for new sod for the football field every year. Stands would generally be full on a Friday night for a game, but not always.

However, if the team can make it work financially and the local community supports it, than there's no issue in my mind.

I went to high school in Texas and our weight room was in our locker room and another room underneath the stadium that we called the dungeon Of course after I left they built a nice weight room and put artificial turf.

Yall sound like a bunch of old coots..."I had to walk a mile in my only pair of shoes to catch the bus into town, by which time I'd already been up for 4 hrs, milking the cows and such."

I went to the "good" HS so we had top-notch facilities for our 4A championship football program. The "bad" HS was really kick-ass in basketball - also 4A champs, while football was our thing (I played basketball at the good HS, we did win the 4A b-ball championship a few years before I played). That said, our weight room was upstairs in the gym, above the men's locker room. There were perhaps four weight benches, a cable machine, and a leg-press machine. There were several cable units screwed to the walls that I never saw anybody use.

Us basketball players were only allowed to use the weight room when the football players weren't using it, which was pretty much only on Friday nights it seemed. So if we weren't playing a game, we got to work out in the gym. About all the coach was interested in us doing was leg presses and squats, I don't think I ever did a single bench press all during my short b-ball career.

We played big schools in St. Louis and Kansas City, schools that had facilities much nicer than ours, and beat them up pretty handily.

That certainly is a great place to go to school. Hopefully it instills a sense of confidence and worth for the student body to go on and do great things.

The good news is if you don't want to pay the ISD's tax rate you can move somewhere else. As a side note, that's the only school which presents a challenge to Lake Travis (where my boys will go) in Texas 4A ball.

A quick Google search for them says their school is a $25 million facility.

Bonds for facilities is one of the best ways to improve schools since the state steals the property tax dollars raised by schools in rich districts. Better facilities helps attract and retain better teachers.

I think we actually beat Lake Travis last season. Was a great game.

Must have thirty of these machines:

And of course there's the new INDOOR practice facility:

What a f*cking waste of money.

Why? Because you don't like it?

Bearing in mind that as mentioned before...this was voted for by taxpayers and it is clearly what they wanted, and that the school isn't suffering in other programs, what is wasteful about it, specifically?
