Love the teachers equating their position to those in Egypt.

Ted's in Iowa actually, but he's plenty familiar with this state.

What's happening here? Well, white shit keeps falling out of the sky daily, and our new Governor is making good on the campaign promises that got him elected.

No complaints here.

I was, now I'm in BFE IA, and trying to get out.

I don't know much about the collective bargaining aspect, but I can tell you about the benefits that educators would receive in WI. They were really freakin' nice.

I came out of grad school and landed a job teaching labs at University of WI Stevens Point. Pay was ~$28K/year, but the health benefits were great at ~$60/month for pretty much everything covered with minimum out of pocket expense, in fact I don't remember paying anything out of pocket. If I wanted vision or dental, it was a very nominal fee for a good benefit, maybe $5/month.

When I left WI and moved to higher ed in IA, price tripled and amount I had to pay increased substantially. My pay level was in line with a similar job back in WI, but the health care costs were higher.

I tried explaining this to my SIL who's in higher ed English back in WI, but she didn't want to hear it at all. They've also got a pretty antiquated system about who can teach what, not based on ability and knowledge but mainly pedigree (i.e. I can teach at a 2 year school in IA with an MS, but I can't in WI because they would require a PhD.)

I love WI, and it's a great state, but it's high time for those working public sector to take their bite of the shit sandwich that is the economy instead of skating through relatively unscathed (I don't count a few furlough days that is ~3% of your pay to be a good enough sacrifice.).

Overheard an interview with one of the Democrat "leaders" at the protest.

They said that if they cut pay to the teachers then the teachers will have less money to spend resulting in less money going into the economy which means less tax receipts for the state.

Wow...what an amazing lack of understanding on display.

"Exactly, because everybody knows the best way to stimulate the economy is by handing out more unemployment benefits."

Totally and completely unsurprised. Many of these individuals lead sheltered lives, and have spent little to no time in the real world.

This observation hinges on my personal experience:
I really believe that most of them don't understand how and where that money comes from, and the idea that the well might run dry is completely foreign to them. It hasn't before, so why would it now?

I work with a guy blaming the Republicans about this claiming that it will come to affect the diesel workers union with lower wages. Saying that only the Democrats care about the middle class.

What idiots like that fail to realize is that the Republicans support business owners...business owners who employ the middle class. Dems love to tax the heck out of small business owners which results in lower wages and fewer jobs. Seems pretty elementary unless I'm totally missing something--I'm no economist

Dems also raise the minimum wage, making prices go up at the places that employ minimum wage workers. Minimum wage earners maintain the status quo. Middle income people suffer. The employer also cuts hours to offset the increased wages of the workers.
