Is it possible to willfully escape your upbringing?

I do believe that sometimes how far the parents push the offspring from the nest has a lot to do with changes and successes in life.

Otherwise the proverbial apple never falls far from the tree.

I'm glad my parents told me the sky's the limit. I just wished they had pushed a little harder sometimes...

Both. It is possible, but unlikely for most people. The human brain is a combination of pre-programmed instincts, combined with what it learns as you grow up.

I'd say it's certainly not just money (or the lack thereof) that makes up our upbringing and shapes us.

I'd also say that it often takes a conscious effort for someone to escape their upbringing, but it is possible.

I believe that money, or in my case the lack thereof, plus coming from a broken home at an early age, influenced me a helluva lot to be the person I am today.
I loathed the way I grew up, and after a brief self destruction trip in my late teens/early 20's, I made up my mind that I would make something of myself, or die trying.
It wasn't easy, not by a longshot, but I prevailed.
I also had heard that ones personality is formed by 6 years of age, and will be that personality for life. Whether or not this is true, I tend to think that it may have some credibility, as when I was 6-7, were some of the roughest years of my life, with the end results of me being extremely distrustful and suspicious to this day.
