I think the law went too far in that I think a school should be allowed to keep the name if the tribe approves, but the intent is in the right place.

The State Board of Education voted 5-1 at its May 17 meeting to ban the use of Native American mascots in all K-12 Oregon schools that receive public funding.

Looks like you are splitting hairs here, Joe. The same thing happened at Ole Miss, where some peeps found the mascot (Col. Reb) "offensive"; not only did the mascot get changed, the team name did, too. (Now the "Black Bears"...and if I were Polar bear I'd be pissed!) If the school is still allowed to call its team "Warriors", but is prohibited from having a Warrior as its mascot, what kind of stupidity is that?

But what would you consider in that category? Too many people are offended by 'Merry Christmas'. So clearly, we should not post it on signs, don't play the music in public, make sure we don't offend people. I mean - I don't celebrate Hanukkah, Kwanza - any of those, but I see no reason to 'ban' the word, claiming it offensive just because it's a religion I don't practice.

If it's clearly a word that is offensive (for instance, the N word) then yes, that's another story, but to ban the use of the word God in the pledge of allegiance, or tell kids they can't say the word Braves or Indian in school, that's just crap. Sure there's plenty of words I probably don't agree on or use, but I wouldn't say 'we need to ban it'. You just ignore it - simple as that.

Then again, that's just my opinion. What do I know?!
