How soon you forget that mass transit is in almost all cities subsidized by gas taxes and tolls since it is monumentally over manged and over expensive.

How soon you forget that most inner city mass transit were started by entrepreneurs and were driven out or forced to sell to the government.

How soon you forget that Trolley and such were first put in place when horses were the norm.

Whenever I go to the City for work, I take the train … it’s the best investment any State that has a large City can make.

I'm a hundred miles from a big city, but I live in fear now that I may have to visit San Francisco sometime and I will not have the freedom to pay $50 a day to park my car.

Options Yes. Welfare program no.
Mass transit as it is current operated in the USA is a Welfare system.

It takes money from one class of people and gives it to another class of people the government has decided are more in need to that money.

It's still welfare to provide a subsidized service at the expense of others.
weather it's Oil subsidizes or Section 8 housing or Gas taxes to support trains. It's subsidizing inefficient operation or lifestyles.

And thats detrimental to all society.

I'm glad I have choices

There's no comparison to Section 8 Housing and Big Oil, and everything in the middle.

BTW, if "they" don't have a place to live, I'm sure you wont mind them living on your streets.

They will freeze to death.

And yes, there are major comparisons. You just fail to recognize that subsidizing failure only encourager's it at the personal and cooperate levels.

Those Americans you don’t care about is exactly why some people think the way they do about the Republican Party … whether it’s true or not, perception is everything. Many of “those” people are cast aside after they, or their sons, daughters, relatives have served this country.

Thankfully there are people who care about “those people” … thankfully Americans are “those people” who care.

And the vast majority of Americans on the dole are worthless and have never produced in their lives. Your point that a small % of them are those who served their country is a pointless deflection on the fact we are subsidizing failure.

I remember a company called DC TRANSIT, operated through the 60's in DC region...bus service was like 25 cents a ride, maybe 50 cents from Rockville to center of DC shopping district.....really cheep, even for then....

so the .gov got involved and forced out O.Roy Chaulk, and formed the METRO system, bus prices went up 5X in less than 2 years....

of course today they have the METRO as their crown jewel....the subway covering some 6? lines and major underground stations, and 80 mph speeds, etc....

Underground rail with high speeds seems to work well in DC, and I guess NYC also.....the biggest bitch is of course parking out in the burbs....the station lots are just gridlock way early AM.....downtown you can walk to anywhere worth going in about 3 minits....on a decent day.....8' of snow is a no go anyway.....

but over large distances, there is just not the ridership to warrant the costs....no freeking way man, if there WAS, from DC/Annapolis to Ocean City Md...would be the route.....

Heck if I would take the bus into the nearest transit center if there was a quick & reliable way for me to get from the transit center to my place of work.
They had a solid bus system when I lived in Stevens Point, WI. I took it everyday, and it was great. Read a lot of books, talked with people, it was awesome.

Not much of a bus system down here in small town IA.

Problem is, it's not self-sustaining.

Socialist conundrum -

Let's consider mass transit everywhere, say suddenly, its the only way to get around - no cars.

So then, can the mass transit workers go on strike?

Do you invalidate their right to strike in order to preserve the ability of the city to function?

Other questions - I guess cars can be banned but large trucks to deliver products like food and clothing would be OK? Or will there be fresh food trains to make deliveries to directly restaurants? If your office buys a new copier - does that come by train?

I guess the trains would run 24/7 so people could get around or do we lock the town down at midnight and reopen at 6? I think there might be people in clubs until 2 and having breakfast at 3 and then the early shift starts at 4. How does that work?

Cities work because individuals can and do get around on their own. It will never be a perfect, clean monolithic society that can be serviced by only one mode of transport.
