If you lived in Florida, it might be an alligator or snake. Sounds like they are coming through the pipes.

Yeah, I'm guessing the sewer pipe. We live in the country so we have a septic. I haven't checked yet but I also think we have vent pipe that goes to the roof and that may be where they are coming in. One of them that I found in the pot was still in the water and when I reached down to grab it (I did check more than once by the way to make sure it was moving) it went down the drain trap. It must have smelled bad because it didn't stay there very long.

In San Bernadino County, they have a problem with crocodiles in the sewer.

A decade ago, we had a problem with cockroaches coming up through the shower drain. Freaked out Mz Friz beyond belief. There is now a rubber stopper over the drain any time it's not in use at her behest.

I would have a coronary if a snake came up the commode, but it ain't likely here. Our snakes have diamonds and rattles on them and don't like water.

A few years ago, some kids in the neighborhood caught a baby snake in a Folgers can. They brought it over and asked me what kind of snake it was. I opened the can lid (slightly) and it hissed at me. I replied "Western Diamondback Rattler....get rid of it". The kids didn't believe me because it didn't have any rattles yet. I explained to them why it didn't, but they weren't having it. An hour later, one of them was being rushed to the E. R.

Luckily nothing dangerous yet. We have mostly Copper heads, but also the occasional Pigmy Rattler. Also others but I haven't seen anything else (including aligators ) in the 10 plus years at this house. I've always heard the babies are the worse because they can't control their venom yet. It only takes a split second and they shoot their whole load. (Hmmm, why does that remind me of something). There was a guy on the news here a couple of years ago that lives about 5 miles from us who was messing with some junk and got tagged by a rattler then fell back while trying to get away and got tagged by a copperhead. Twice in less than a minute and he lived.

Many years ago, I worked at a 10,000 acre test site in San Clemente. The secretaries would find baby rattlers in the office once in a while. No one could figure out how they were getting in. Maintenance thought they were coming in through the wiring or a hole in the wall. They were coming in between the door and the door sill

Nothing like finding a baby rattler under your desk to jump start your day!

If they rattle, you are good. Its a sign from them to tell you; "hey Im here"

Bad thing is if you surprise them, they will slingshot at you (3 times their length) and bite you. You would be a lucky one if they give you a dry bite.

From Jan 97 thru July 98 I encounter them daily. Teached a class to the recruits, learn a lot about them bastards and lost any type of fear against them. This crazy son of a bitch (Recon guy) was trying to teach me how to grab them from behind the head but, I never got to do it on my own.

Ive seen those suckers do anything from mating to eating a turkey vulture.
